On entend fréquemment parler de «drogues dures» et de «drogues douces». Il n'existe en fait aucun critère scientifique permettant un tel classement. Une approximation définirait les «drogues dures» comme celles qui créent une dépendance physique (héroïne, autres opiacés, barbituriques, alcool) ou une dépendance psychique très rapide (crack) ou qui présentent un danger psychique (LSD, ecstasy, etc.) et les drogues douces comme les autres drogues (tabac et cannabis principalement).
