BURNING OUT [30 records]

Record 1 2024-06-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Brush, Prairie and Forest Fires
  • Fire Prevention
CONT

Fires were carried out in June and July, which corresponds to the main fire season for this region of Siberia. Plots were burned under a wide range of fuel moisture and weather conditions to observe effects on fire behaviour, fire severity, emissions, and other ecological factors. All experimental plots were burned using line ignition along the windward side to quickly create equilibrium fire behaviour that mimics wildfires under similar burning conditions...

DEF

An oil burner which delivers fuel oil to the combustion zone in the form of tiny droplets.

CONT

The atomizing type of burner prepares the oil for burning by breaking it up into a fog-like vapor. This is accomplished in three ways :(1) by forcing the oil under pressure through a nozzle air or steam may be forced through with the oil, or the oil may be forced alone or(2) by allowing the oil to flow out the end of small tubes that are rapidly rotated on a distributor, or(3) by forcing the oil off the edge of a rapidly rotating cup that may be mounted either vertically or horizontally.

Subject field(s)
  • Extinguishing Agents
DEF

A fire-fighting material consisting of small bubbles of air, water, and concentrating agents.

CONT

Chemically, the air in the bubbles is suspended in the fluid. The foam clings to vertical and horizontal surfaces and flows freely over burning materials. Foam will put out a fire by blanketing it, excluding air and blocking the escape of volatile vapour. Its flowing properties will resist mechanical interruption and reseal the burning material.

CONT

OBS

Biomass burning has only recently been recognized as a major source of important trace gases and aerosol particles. Through burning, the chemical elements in vegetation are cycled back to the atmosphere and to soils in chemical and physical forms and proportions which make biomass burning an important biogeochemical process. Before the advent of humans, fire was ignited naturally by lightning strikes in dry vegetated regions. Today, however, the process is driven almost exclusively by human activity which includes the burning of forested areas to facilitate land clearing, the burning of harvest debris to maintain cleared land, the extensive burning of natural grasslands and savannas to sustain nomadic agriculture, and the burning of biomass as fuel for cooking and heating. The importance of biomass burning is well recognized in International Global Atmospheric Chemistry and this activity, Biomass Burning Experiment : Impact on the Atmosphere and Biosphere(BIBEX), was established to address this phenomenon. It is being carried out by a multi-national science team at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany.

CONT

The stellar explosions are among the most energetic events in the universe ... They are the dominant source of all elements in the periodic table heavier than oxygen ... The dynamics of an exploding star, involving things like fluid flow and radiation transport, are described in equations known as partial differential equations.

CONT

A supernova is a violent stellar explosion which destroys a star, while ejecting the products of nuclear burning into the gas between stars. The energy for some supernova explosions comes from the collapse of a massive star to a compact neutron star, with the mass of the Sun, but the size of a city. Elements out of which the Earth is formed had their origin in ancient supernova explosions in our own Milky Way Galaxy.

During the process the cask is mopped over with water and the Cresset sometimes splashed to produce steam... The Cresset is usually employed in any case to dry out the moisture from the cask after steaming, and this is said to shrink the fibres of the inside of the cask which helps to set the staves in barrel form.

Subject field(s)
  • Radio Waves
CONT

Inside the radio-wave lamp. An electronic oscillator linked to a small, coiled antenna produces radio waves much like a radio station. Electrons in atoms of mercury vapor absorb the radio waves, which excite the electrons to a higher "energy state". The electrons emit photons, or packets, of invisible ultraviolet light. A phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb absorbs the ultraviolet light, exciting electrons, which then emit visible light.

CONT

Last week a small California company announced that next year, it plans to market the "E-(for electronic)Lamp," a bulb that will be completely interchangeable with incandescents, use a quarter as much energy - and last a decade or more. The secret is a tiny radio-frequency generator in each bulb, transmitting energy to a surrounding cloud of mercury gas and in turn to the fluorescent coating. There are some 1.5 billion light sockets in the United States; each incandescent that is replaced by an E-Lamp would save an estimated ton of carbon dioxide from electrical generating stations over the life of the bulb, a small step toward reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

OBS

Since the electronic components last indefinitely, the bulb should fail only when the phosphor deteriorates(or someone knocks the lamp off the table). And instead of burning out with a "pop, "the new bulbs will gradually become less bright. Someday lamps and fixtures may have the electronic components built into their base, and consumers will just slip on a cheap, replaceable glass jacket containing the mercury and phosphor.
