Any of three toxic flammable oily isomeric aromatic hydrocarbons C6H4(CH3) 2 that are dimethyl homologues of benzene and are obtained from wood tar or commercially in mixtures of the three with ethylbenzene from light oils from coal tar or coke-oven gas or from petroleum distillates by processes for producing toluene.

OBS

Use: Aviation gasoline; protective coatings; solvent for alkyd resins, lacquers, enamels, rubber cements; synthesis of organic chemicals.

OBS

Formule chimique : C6H4(CH3)2 ou C8H10 ou (CH3)2C6H4

Universal entry(ies)
DEF

A commercial mixture containing xylenes and ethylbenzene used chiefly as a solvent, as a blending agent esp. in aviation gasoline, or in making xylidines.

DEF

A commercial mixture of the three isomers, o- [ortho], m- [meta], and p- xylene [paraxylene]. The last two predominate.

OBS

Even if HACHE, p. 1243 gives "dimethylbenzene" as a synonym of "xylol", it seems it's rather a synonym of "xylene" in the sense of "any of three isomeric hydrocarbons C6H4(CH3) 2". In OXENG, the terms xylol and xylene are used synonymously.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
Entrée(s) universelle(s)
DEF
