Les hydrates sont ainsi composés d'un composé, le lisinopril dans le cas présent, et d'un certain nombre de molécules d'eau (2 ici); l'eau peut se trouver sous forme d'eau de cristallisation ou sous n'importe quelle forme. Le terme hydrate est une exception à la règle de nomenclature qui veut que la terminaison en «ate» désigne un anion : le terme hydrate désigne une molécule d'eau et non l'ion OH- qui est nommé «hydroxide». Dans un nom de composé d'addition, les molécules d'eau sont toujours citées en dernier lieu. Une molécule d'eau est signalée par le terme «monohydrate»; les préfixes multiplicatifs «di-», «tri-», «tétra-», etc., sont utilisés pour indiquer le nombre de molécules d'eau (2,3,4, etc.). Le nom «lisinopril dihydrate» est conforme à l'usage. L'adjectif «hydraté» a été proposé, sans succès.
