CALCIUM RESORPTION BONE [3 records]

Record 1 2003-07-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Medication
  • Immunology
DEF

The condition produced by greatly reduced function of the parathyroids possibly due to autoimmune disease or genetic factors, or by the removal of those bodies. The lack of parathyroid hormone leads to a fall in plasma calcium level-which may result in increased neuro-muscular excitability and, ultimately, tetany-followed by a rise in plasma phosphate level, resulting in a decrease in bone resorption and consequent increased density of bone.

DEF

Record 2 1994-03-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Bones and Joints
DEF

... transient hypocalcemia due to rapid uptake of extracellular calcium by bone that was demineralized by the effects of excess parathyroid hormone.

CONT

Finally, there are conditions in which bone formation is unmatched by bone resorption, leading to hypocalcemia by rapid deposition of calcium in bone. This is the mechanism underlying the hypocalcemia observed in the following situations : the "hungry bone disease" seen after successful parathyroidectomy in patients with hyperparathyroid bone disease...

CONT

The biphosphonates, a new class of bone resorption inhibitors, have been shown to be particularly safe so they result especially effective on controlling acute hypercalcemia and on preventing "hungry bone disease". (In Recenti Prog Med (ITALY) Apr 1993, 84 (4) p287-95, cited in data base.)

Domaine(s)
  • Os et articulations
CONT

Record 3 1994-03-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Bones and Joints
CONT

Extracellular calcium homeostasis involves coordinated calcium absorption by the intestine, calcium resorption from bone, and calcium reabsorption by the kidney.(In American journal of physiology, Renal, fluid and electrolyte physiology, 1993, 33(2) F181-F198, cited in PASCAL data base.)

French

Domaine(s)
  • Os et articulations
CONT
