In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. La posture du tailleur est une posture très simple où vous vous assoyez les jambes croisées, comme le font les enfants. Energetech Australia is building a prototype electricity generator based on wave power on the breakwater at Port Kembla in New South Wales. A submerged chamber is open below the water level. When the waves rise up around the chamber, the water inside the chamber rises and falls with the waves. This compresses and decompresses air above the water in the chamber, creating airflow which drives a turbine. The turbines work with the air flowing in both directions. The blades change angle, depending on the speed and direction of the airflow … An ocean wall in the shape of a parabola concentrates the wave energy onto a central point where the power station is located … The amount of converted energy depends on the wind speed, the time the wind blows over the waves, and the distance it covers. During a wave's voyage, it shapes into a more regular wave, commonly referred to as a swell. At ocean shores, swells are very regular and discernable, even when the sea is calm. 1, record 46, English, - wave%20energy%20breakwater

The primary purpose of a stall guard is indeed to keep the horse from coming out of the stall. The stall guard or chain may be used to keep the animal in a stall for a short period or long time period.... However, utilizing stall guards and chains instead of solid stall doors will help to improve the air circulation in the barn. The guard is also easier to adjust to the individual horse than a solid or Dutch door would be. Providing a stall with a stall guard that allows a horse to look out may calm a nervous horse... Horses are usually social creatures, preferring to be in larger groups. Being able to look out of the stall and see other horses will be reassuring to the horse.... In addition, the stall guard can assist in training a horse.... Another use for stall guards is to display information or to make a show barn look classier. Owners of show horses or race horses frequently have stall guards customized with their logos and stable colors to enhance their business image.... Stall guards may also be used as a temporary method of separating horses from each other. For instance, a solid stall guard can be used in a stock trailer to separate a mother from her foal while traveling. 2, record 52, English, - stall%20guard

Hygrometers in the home are ordinarily of the hair type. Some "hygrometers" are actually stationary psychrometers, with the wet-bulb covered by a wick which carries a constant flow of water from a small dish or tube. Such instruments may give fairly accurate humidity measurements indoors if the air is calm and proper humidity tables are used, but outside the variation of air movement about the wet-bulb produces corresponding variations in the reliability of derived humidity values. 1, record 54, English, - stationary%20psychrometer

3, record 55, French, - sophrologie

The anti-clutter sea control is often referred to as STC(Sensitivity Time Control) which decreases the amplification of the receiver immediately after a radar pulse is transmitted, and progressively increases the sensitivity as the range increases. A common mistake is to over adjust the A/C SEA control so that the surface clutter is completely removed. By rotating the control fully clockwise, you see how dangerous this can be; a dark zone is created near the center of the screen and close-in targets can be lost. This dark zone is even more dangerous if the gain has not been properly adjusted. Always leave a little surface clutter visible on the screen. If no surface clutter is observed(on very calm water), set the control at the fully counterclockwise position. 3, record 56, English, - anti%2Dclutter%20sea%20control

DOUGLAS, Douglas Sea State. Douglas Sea Scale. Douglas Scale. Douglas Swell Scale. Douglas Sea and Swell Scale. ... what do they mean? Douglas is the name given to a set of tables used to describe sea and swell conditions. The Douglas Sea tables refer to the waves generated by the wind in the locality at the time, the Douglas Swell tables refer to decaying waves originally generated by distant winds, and the Douglas Sea and Swell tables are a combination of the two. Originally, Douglas made no mention of heights or wave periods, and used only words to define the sea and swell conditions, e.g., slight sea, moderate sea or long low swell, short moderate swell. The combined definition was produced by a sea description followed by a swell description. But different publications have interpreted the Douglas Scales to produce wave heights and periods; and different interpretations have led to confusion. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, there is no internationally recognised definition or official status for any of the Douglas scales. 2, record 64, English, - Douglas%20scale

During radiation freezes, layers of cold air are formed with the coldest air normally found near the radiating surface. 2, record 74, English, - radiation%20frost

In New England, at least one killing frost and preferably a substantial period of normally cool weather must precede this warm spell in order for it to be considered a true Indian summer. It does not occur every year, and in some years there may be two or three Indian summers. The term is most often heard in the northeastern United States, but its usage extends throughout English- speaking countries. It dates back at least to 1778, but its origin is not certain; the most probable suggestions relate it to the way that the American Indians availed themselves of this extra opportunity to increase their winter stores. The comparable period in Europe is termed the Old Wives’ summer, and, poetically, may be referred to as halcyon days. In England, dependent upon dates of occurrence, such a period may be called St. Martin’s summer, St. Luke’s summer, and formerly All-hallown summer. 4, record 77, English, - Indian%20summer

8, record 77, French, - %C3%A9t%C3%A9%20des%20Indiens

It has been explained as a transition between the summer and winter pressure types. In summer, central Europe is dominated by the Azores high, from which a wedge of high pressure extends to southwestern Germany. In winter, the dominant feature is the Siberian high, from which a ridge extends across Switzerland. Between these two stages there is often a period, on the average occurring between 18 and 22 September, during which an independent anticyclone forms over Germany. As this gradually drifts away eastward, the Old Wives’ summer tends to be delayed until October in the western part of the former Soviet Union. The term itself probably stems from the widespread existence of old wives’ tales concerning this striking feature of autumn weather. 2, record 78, English, - Old%20wives%26rsquo%3B%20summer

European sailors had been traveling across the Atlantic and around Africa for more than two centuries, and they recognized a general latitudinal pattern : light and variable winds, with daily thunderstorms, near the equator--the "doldrums"; prevailing easterly winds near the tropics--the "trade winds"; prevailing westerly winds in the mid-latitudes; and between the belts of easterlies and westerlies a zone of usually clear skies and calm air, the so-called "horse latitudes" where a ship could be stuck for weeks at a time in the calms of Cancer or Capricorn. 2, record 83, English, - calms%20of%20Capricorn

As stated before, the atmospheric conditions which are most favorable for the Green Flash are a calm and stratified atmosphere. When the Sun is a few degrees above the horizon, it appears distorted and flattened in the vertical direction(although the azimuthal size hardly changes). The closer it gets to the horizon, the more flattened it gets. Soon, the edge of the sun will become "notched" on either side. These notches appear to "ride" up the sides of the Sun from bottom to top; however, in reality, the notches are caused by the atmospheric layering and aren’t moving-it's the sun which is setting through them. 1, record 98, English, - atmospheric%20layering
