Any surface usually forming part of the rear portion of a wing, adjustable in flight, the primary function of which is to increase the lift.

OBS

Wing flaps are hinged or sliding surfaces mounted at the trailing edges of wings and designed to increase the camber of the wings. As explained previously, the purpose of flaps is to increase the lift of the wing at a particular speed and angle of attack and also to increase the drag. Wing flaps are particularly useful in the approach to a landing to increase the gliding angle and decrease the landing speed of an aircraft.

A hinged portion of the leading edge of a wing or aerofoil which, when rotated downwards, increases the camber and consequently the maximum lift, especially of very thin wings.

Some airplanes are equipped with leading-edge flaps that are extended when the wing flaps are employed. The leading-edge flap, when retracted, forms the leading edge of the wing. When extended, the flap moves forward and down to increase the camber of the wing and provide greater lift at low flight speeds.

A leading edge flap reduces the suction peak just behind the leading edge, produces a thinner boundary layer and increases the stalling angle in a similar way.

Three Kruger-type flaps are installed on each wing [of a large multi-engine turbine aircraft]. The flaps are machined magnesium castings with integral ribs and stiffeners. The Fowler flap and others with similar operation are designed to increase substantially the wing area as the flap is extended. When retracted, the flap forms the trailing edge of the wing. As this type of flap is extended, it is moved rearward, often by means of a worm gear, and is supported in the correct position by means of curved tracks. The effect of the Fowler flap, when extended, is to greatly reduce the stalling speed of the aircraft by the increase in wing area and change in wing camber.

The plain flat, in effect, acts as if the trailing edge of the wing were deflected downward to change the camber of the wing, thus increasing both lift and drag. A variable camber flap concept is optimized to reduce the drag of a low speed light UAV [Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle] between its stall and cruise speeds using an in-house aerodynamic shape optimization code. The flap, which maintains continuity on the upper surface, was analyzed both numerically and experimentally and was shown to provide important reductions in drag when compared to the clean wing/airfoil in the lower speed range(2. 7% on average for the wing) and to have significant actuation energy savings when compared to a conventional plain flap(in the order of 40%). Although the concept uses current actuator technology and materials it is a good option for improving flight endurance/range at low speed over other more complex and advanced morphing concepts.

Flaps increase lift by changing the shape of the airfoil. A pilot will extend the flaps when the airplane is landing. By extending the flaps, the pilot is increasing the camber of the wing, the size of the wing and the wing's angle of attack. All of these actions will cause lift to decrease so the airplane can land more slowly.

Differential adjustment: An aircraft has its wing defined as a wing-like body with a tangential flow rotor in the leading edge. A shroud, under the lower part of the tangential flow rotor, terminates in at least one movable flap defining a lift-generating lip when the rotor is rotating such that the upper part of the rotor, projecting above the level of the upper surface of the wing-like body, is moving rearwardly. Differential adjustment of the flaps in the wings to either side of an aircraft centerline allows directional control and control of banking of the aircraft.
