CANCER VACCINE [5 records]

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
CONT

In terms of treatment, scientists have for more than three decades tried to find ways to sic the immune system on cancer-a tactic termed immunotherapy or vaccine therapy. And for good reason. Because immunity is a systemic reaction, it could potentially eliminate all cancer cells in patient's body-even when they migrate away from the original tumor site or reappear after years of clinical remission.

OBS

Gene therapy for cancer.

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
DEF

DEF

A vaccine received by a patient after a disease(e. g. cancer) is diagnosed, in order to prevent cancers, removed by surgery, from recurring.

CONT

The pan-Canadian Cancer Project aims to develop its own "magic bullet". Pasteur Merieux Connaught, the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, plans to spend $350 million over the next 10 years to research therapeutic vaccines. The project will involve 60 organizations across Canada, including hospitals, universities, other biotechnology companies and the federal government Technology Partnership Canada program, which has invested $60 million.

CONT

The goal of [the] research study is to find out if patients receiving an anti-cancer vaccine made from their own kidney tumor after removal of the kidney helps to keep them alive longer than patients who receive no vaccine.

OBS

anticancer vaccine; anti-cancer vaccine; cancer vaccine :[In these terms, the word] "vaccine" is slightly misleading, because the experimental medicine does not prevent cancer. Rather, patients receive vaccines after cancer is diagnosed.... Using monoclonal antibodies is an immunotherapy technique but not a vaccine.

CONT

The body's immune system distinguishes normal from "foreign" cells by the molecules, called antigens, found on each cell wall. Cancer cells have specific antigens that act as targets for the immune system. Some scientists say a vaccine containing the right combination and number of these antigens-a cocktail, in research lingo-is the best potential weapon.
