Two... general tactics are discussed... under the concepts of capital and income breeding. These are defined mainly from the temporal distribution of resource acquisition relative to resource use. A capital breeder acquires its resources in advance and store them endogenously or exogenously until they are needed to supply aspects of offspring production. An income breeder, on the other hand, adjusts its food intake concurrently with breeding, without reliance on stores.

As a former gunnery officer, Fisher revolutionized battleship design with the first all-big-gun ship, the HMS Dreadnought. Fisher was a firm believer in two things, the first being that speed was as good a form of protection as armor. His second belief was in the overwhelming power of large-caliber naval guns, and he firmly held that a single, devastating hit would decide most capital ship engagements. These two premises led to the development of the battlecruiser and to the rapid increase in gun sizes with each generation of ships. Envisioned as a sort of "super armored cruiser, "the type was designed to scout for the battlefleet without fear from enemy cruisers, yet was fast enough to escape an enemy battleship. They were to be capable of running down any existing cruiser and destroying it, thus protecting British supply lines to her overseas empire.

CONT

In the attention economy, the new scarcest resource isn’t ideas or even talent, but attention itself. In our data rich environment accessing information has become less difficult than focussing on the right kind of information. In this new economy, capital, labour, information and knowledge are all in relatively plentiful supply. It's relatively easy to start a business, to get access to customers and markets, to develop a strategy, to put up a web site, do design ads and commercials. Yet what's in short supply is human attention... Unfortunately most organisations and individuals have precious little attention to spare. Attention is the real currency of business and individuals.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Économie de l'entreprise
  • Commerce électronique
CONT

  • Grain Growing
DEF

A hedging transaction of buying futures or call options to protect against a possible price increase in the cost of a commodity.

CONT

The "buying hedge" protects against price increases. Suppose an exporter sells a cargo of grain for delivery in six months. If the exporter buys the grain upon receipt of the order, to ensure a supply at a known price, capital would be tied up and storage, insurance and interest costs incurred. If [he] waits until the delivery date to buy the grain, there is the risk of a price increase. However, by buying a contract in the futures market, [he] establishes the price and ensures a supply to meet his commitment, without paying holding costs other than those built into the price.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Finances
  • Prix (Commercialisation)
  • Culture des céréales
DEF

Because development theory, for countries like India and the United States, is preoccupied with the concept of "balanced growth", the Neumann model is of considerable interest. It is particularly relevant to the case where an industrial sector in a poor country finds it can get an unlimited supply of laborers from the rural sector at the same wage cost in terms of subsistence; needing little land, the industrial sector can "take off" and grow at a constant Neumann-percentage rate per year, provided it can produce the capital goods needed to match the new labor or can be helped by imports from foreign lenders, aiders, or exporters.
