CASING WHILE DRILLING [6 records]

Record 1 2011-01-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
  • Boring and Drilling (Mines)
DEF

A rotary drilling process that cases the well as it is drilled.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
  • Sondage et forage miniers
DEF

There are three principal types of augers used for well drilling : bucket augers, solid-stem augers, and hollow-stem augers.... Solid-stem augers consist of spiral flanges welded to a pipe. One length of pipe(or auger section) is called a flight; multiple auger sections are often referred to as continuous flighting. The leading auger flight has a special bit or cutter head attached that cuts a hole for the flights to follow. Flights are added as the hole is drilled deeper. Cuttings from the drilling process are brought to the surface by the action of the augers.... Hollow-stem augers are similar to solid-stem augers in design, except that drill rods can pass through the auger sections.... Because the flights are hollow, they can be used as temporary casing to hold the hole open while the permanent casing is installed. Wells drilled with hollow-stem augers have been used to construct water supply wells, but they are more often used to construct monitoring wells.

Record 3 2004-07-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
DEF

Casing that is installed in a well to facilitate well control during drilling of the hole for the surface casing.

CONT

Conductor casing is installed first, usually prior to the arrival of the drilling rig. The hole for conductor casing is often drilled with a small auger drill, mounted on the back of a truck. Conductor casing, which is usually no more than 20 to 50 feet long, is installed to prevent the top of the well from caving in and to help in the process of circulating the drilling fluid up from the bottom of the well. Onshore, this casing is usually 16 to 20 inches in diameter while offshore casing usually measures 30 to 42 inches. The conductor casing is cemented into place before drilling begins.

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Equipment (Oil and Natural Gas Extraction)
  • Oil Drilling
DEF

A special coupling device, inserted one or two joints above the bottom of the casing string, that contains a check valve to permit fluid to pass downward but not upward through the casing.

CONT

The float collar prevents drilling mud from entering the casing while it is being lowered, allowing the casing to float during its descent and also decreasing the load on the derrick. The float collar also prevents a backflow of cement during the cementing operation.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
  • Oil Production
DEF

Drill pipe, drill collars, casing, or tubing that has inadvertently become lodged immovably in the hole.

OBS

Sticking may occur while drilling is in progress, while casing is being run in the hole, or while the drill pipe is being hoisted.

Subject field(s)

DEF

A short, heavy, cylindrical steel section, filled with concrete and rounded at the bottom, which is placed at the bottom end of the casing string.

CONT

The guide shoe prevents the casing from hanging up on irregularities in the borehole as it is lowered. A passage through the center of the shoe allows the drilling fluid to pass up into the casing while it is being lowered and the cement to pass out through the shoe during cementing operations.
