Le cerveau proprement dit est formé de deux hémisphères cérébraux, d'aspect plissés dont la substance blanche, interne, est recouverte d'un cortex cérébral gris, d'épaisseur variable. Trois sillons plus accentués (scissure de Sylvius, sillon de Rolando, sillon perpendiculaire) divisent chaque hémisphère en quatre lobes (frontal, temporal, pariétal, occipital) comprenant chacun un certain nombre de circonvolutions.

OBS

Le terme «encéphale» est l'équivalent du terme anglais «brain», à ne pas confondre avec le terme «cerveau».
