When high and low points of several items [or the range of a variable over a period of time] are to be compared, a range chart will give a simple visual comparison. ... The bars are not aligned at the base, but each starts at its low point and ends at its high.

The range chart with horizontal bars is called range-bar chart(cf. SEINA, 1976, p. 165), with vertical bars, a range-column chart(cf. SEINA, 1976, p. 157), and with lines, a high-low graph(cf. KESTA, 1975, p. 67).

Le principe du graphique en banderole consiste à porter deux ou plusieurs points sur une même ordonnée.

On pointe, sur la même ordonnée, les grandeurs extrêmes prises par une même valeur et qui ont été enregistrées dans les limites de l'unité de variable choisie, et ainsi de suite, d'ordonnée en ordonnée. On relie entre eux les points supérieurs, puis entre eux les points inférieurs et l'on hachurera l'aire comprise entre les deux diagrammes. On a ainsi l'impression visuelle exacte de l'importance des variations. Au lieu de tracer les deux diagrammes et de hachurer leur intervalle, on peut relier les deux points extrêmes par une verticale.

OBS

La relation générique-spécifique entre "range chart" et "graphique en banderole" est motivée par le fait qu'en français la notion "graphique en banderole" ne couvre pas la représentation à traits horizontaux.
