CONT

The calculated ozone reduction is extremely sensitive to any tropospheric sink for the chlorofluoromethanes. For example, only about 1% of the CFMs [chlorofluoromethanes] in the atmosphere is dissociated each year, so that if there were an inactive sink that removes 2% of the CFMs each year without destroying ozone, then the ozone reduction would be only one-third of the estimate without such a sink.

CONT

Another criterion for establishing boundaries on physical grounds involves a consideration of areas of material accumulation, or sinks. ... in projects involving the release of toxic materials, it is extremely important not only to understand the transport mechanisms involved but to have the site of accumulation included within the assessment boundary, although it may be some distance removed from the geographical focus of the project.

OBS

Something or some mechanism by which an air pollutant disappears from the air.

CONT

CONT

As has already been mentioned, the CFMs persist in the troposphere for very long periods of time(about 40 years is the mean residence time for CFC13 and 70 years for CF2C12), and the observed buildup of the CFMs in the lower atmosphere suggests that virtually all of the gas released to date is still in the troposphere.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Air Pollution
CONT

Since only about 1% of the CFMs are dissociated each year, a small tropospheric sink would have tremendous impact. For example, if a tropospheric sink accounted for only 2% of the CFMs released, the peak ozone reduction would be reduced by two-thirds. Direct measurement of a tropospheric sink is not possible because both the CFM release to the atmosphere and the atmospheric burden of CFMs is imprecisely known.

DEF

OBS

CONT

Our analysis of the available evidence would seem to suggest that regulatory action should not take the form of a complete moratorium on production and distribution of CFMs. Rather that, if and when regulations are introduced, selective banning of CFMs in non-essential uses(particularly aerosols, other than medical and pharmaceutical applications) should be used.
