As per source TLFRA, "chatterton" is an obsolete term in English now replaced by the term "insulating tape."

La liaison entre les conducteurs avait lieu par épissure [...] l'isolation étant assurée par du ruban adhésif textile, connu sous le nom de chatterton. [...] cette technique s'est révélée très défaillante s'agissant de l'isolation, le chatterton vieillissant mal [...] En dépit des progrès faits dans le domaine du ruban adhésif (aujourd'hui en matière plastique), les épissures sont désormais proscrites des installations.

Chatterton [...] supplanté en anglais par l'appellation populaire «insulating tape».
