Un interrupteur, au sens strict, est un appareil à commande manuelle destiné à établir ou interrompre les circuits électriques : il est constitué d'un couteau métallique pivotant autour d'un axe fixe et qui, à la fermeture, vient se fixer entre deux mâchoires métalliques. Il existe également des modèles rotatifs moins encombrants. Dans les deux cas, l'interrupteur présente un dispositif de rupture brusquée constitué, par exemple, d'un doigt auxiliaire articulé, associé à un ressort, qui rend le temps de coupure pendant lequel se produit l'arc à peu près indépendant de la rapidité avec laquelle la commande manuelle est actionnée.
