Record 4 2010-06-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Analytical Chemistry
DEF

The portion of a differential chromatogram recording the detector response when a single component is eluted from the column.

OBS

If separation is incomplete, two or more components may be eluted as one unresolved peak.

PHR

Peak broadening, purity, tailing.

PHR

Coeluting, overlapping chromatographic peak.

PHR

Attenuate the peak.

PHR

Radioactive, symmetrical, very sharp peak.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie analytique
DEF

CONT

Piezoelectric Sorption Detector. Piezoelectric quartz crystal, long used as frequency and time standards to one part in 108 or better, have been shown by King to be selective gas detectors when coated with various chromatographic liquid phases. Used as detectors, such coated crystals have several advantages :(1) sensitivity increases with solute or sample boiling point,(2) detectors selective to compound type can be made with response times of the order of 0. 05 sec, and(3) the output signal is a frequency which simplifies integration of peak areas and digital presentation of data.

CONT

Some UV spectrophotometric detectors(e. g. Hewlett-Packard) are designed to allow spectral scanning of chromatographic peaks during the separation, using a stop-flow technique. Depending on the equipment, the peak trapped in the cell can be manually or automatically scanned, to provide information regarding the optimum wavelength and identity of the component.

Subject field(s)

CONT

By monitoring a desired adsorption frequency and adjusting the spectrophotometer's chart speed to equal that of a thermal conductivity cell placed in the gas stream, the absorption curves represent integrals of the absorbing components since each successive fraction is accumulated in the infrared cell and the front of the mass or chromatographic peak was matched with the initial increase in adsorbance.

Record 9 1985-10-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Water Pollution
DEF

the period that water or wastewater, at a given hydraulic loading, will be retained in a reactor, unit process, or facility.

CONT

The time that elapses between sample introduction and the appearance of the chromatographic peak belonging to a component is the retention time of that component. The retention time of a compound under a fixed set of operating conditions is a reproducible quantity.... The retention time of a component is therefore used for its qualitative identification.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'eau
DEF
