[Parental lock function] allows the "locking" of software at the discretion of parents to prevent undesired viewing by children depending on content of software. Normal playback of the disc with this type of parental lock function requires a registered identification code and otherwise undesirable scenes are automatically skipped.

[Le verrouillage parental] permet de poser un «verrou» ayant pour effet de supprimer sur chaque disque DVD visionné, des scènes potentiellement dangereuses pour un jeune public. Une fois ce verrou installé, un code d'identification sera nécessaire pour obtenir une lecture intégrale, à défaut de quoi le lecteur sautera automatiquement les scènes jugées trop impressionnantes. Ce dispositif est également disponible sur certains téléviseurs et magnétoscopes. Dans ce cas, l'accès à ces appareils n'est possible qu'avec une manipulation spécifique (plusieurs touches à appuyer en même temps) ou un code.
