In 1994, the Presidents of the Medical Research Council of Canada(MRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada(NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada(SSHRC), collectively appointed a multi-disciplinary working group(the Tri-Council Working Group) and gave it the mandate to develop new policies and regulations to replace the Councils’ existing guidelines for research involving humans. The "Code of Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans"(the Code) is the result of that process and supersedes both the MRC "Guidelines on Research Involving Human Subjects" 1977 and the 1987 SSHRC "Ethics Guidelines for Research with Human Subjects". This Code complements the 1990 MRC "Guidelines for Research on Somatic Cell Gene Therapy in Humans". 1, record 1, English, - Code%20of%20Ethical%20Conduct%20for%20Research%20Involving%20Humans

In November 1996 the Council of Europe adopted a Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine designed to ensure ethical medical practice(including tight controls on trials) in member states. In Canada, a new "Code of Conduct for Research Involving Humans" is raising hackles among the country's academics; subjects who withdraw in mid-trial can also "withdraw" their data if they feel they were tricked into joining the trial in the first place. 2, record 2, English, - Convention%20on%20Human%20Rights%20and%20Biomedicine
