PIT tags are shaped like a grain of rice and are approximately 12 mm long, 2 mm in diameter and weigh 70 mg. PIT tags contain an electromagnetic coil and microchip that transmit a unique code when powered by a magnetic field. The PIT tag reader provides the magnetic field that allows the tag to transmit its code; without the reader[, ] the tag will not transmit its code.

A slot reader is a relatively simple device for reading badges or plastic cards. The badge or card is manually moved along a slot that guides it past a sensing station. The data to be read may be encoded magnetically or printed in bar code or machine-readable font. Since the rate of movement past the read head is not controlled by the device, the sensing head and electronics are generally designed to work over a range of speeds.

A fixed or mobile data capture and identification device using a radio frequency electromagnetic field to stimulate and effect a modulated data response from a transponder or group of transponders present in the interrogation zone.

CONT

RFID readers, also called interrogators, are used to recognize the presence of nearby RFID tags. An RFID reader transmits RF [radio frequency] energy through one or more antennas. An antenna in a nearby tag picks up the energy, and the tag then converts it into electrical energy via induction. This electrical energy is sufficient to power the semiconductor chip attached to the tag antenna, which stores the tag's identity. The tag then sends the identity back to the reader by raising and lowering the resistance of the antenna in a kind of Morse code.

After the user doing part of the task with the reduced quantity, the support application creates another, duplicate, task for the remaining quantity. A disadvantage of early bar code cards was that the code was visible to any observer and consequently easy to duplicate. Recent versions have been introduced for security applications that encode the card so that they are readable only by ultraviolet or infrared light patterns of frequencies produced by the resonant circuit. The card code is then relayed to the remote card reader, which translates the pattern into the access information.
