The partial restoration of function sometimes seen in the cis-trans test when the two mutations are located at different sites within the same cistron.

It may then be the result of interpolypeptide complementation between aggregates of identical polypeptide chains, coded for by one cistron and which in aggregate(as dimers, trimers, etcetera) make up one(hybrid) enzyme molecule; interaction between two or more individually defective polypeptide chains may lead to one functional enzyme molecule, if mutual correction of faulty conformation occurs in the double mutant.
