By November, the Arctic inversion becomes well established and the basin area begins to experience lower mean temperatures than the surrounding mountain region. With cold air continually draining into the basin and a net loss of radiation due to long, often clear and calm winter nights, the surface temperatures can become bitterly cold, at times dropping below minus 50 °C. 2, record 1, English, - Arctic%20inversion

Radiation frost occurs on clear nights with little or no wind when the outgoing radiation is excessive and the air temperature is not necessarily at the freezing point. 4, record 3, English, - radiation%20frost
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT
An advection freeze occurs when cooling by advection predominates, and a radiation freeze occurs when radiational heat loss is the predominant form of cooling. Radiation freezes occur mostly on clear, calm nights after cold air has moved into the region. The primary mechanism is loss of heat into space during the night.... During radiation freezes, layers of cold air are formed with the coldest air normally found near the radiating surface. 2, record 3, English, - radiation%20frost

Why Floor Insulation Works. Heat doesn’t rise. The myth that heat rises was used for many years to justify not insulating floors at all. That led to some very cold feet. It's hot air that rises. An air mass that is warmer than the air around it will rise in relation to that cooler air. The process of hot air rising is called convection. It's only one way that heat can escape a building. Two others are conduction and radiation. Floor insulation limits all three modes of heat loss. A warmer floor reduces the temperature difference that drives convection. Floor insulation also directly impedes conduction and radiation to the colder air below the floor. 1, record 4, English, - floor%20insulation

2, record 4, French, - isolation%20du%20plancher

Airtight construction. Any house has a large number of potential air leakage points... These leakage points let cold outside air in, and warm inside air out. As a result, in a conventional house, it is not uncommon for the heated indoor air to be completely changed every half hour. A major potential problem associated with this air change [is] condensation in the building's structure... There is in addition, a second problem : such air change typically accounts for 25-30 per cent of the total house heat loss... The use of an air-vapour barrier is an attempt to prevent these problems by stopping virtually all air leakage. 1, record 5, English, - airtight%20construction
