Record 1 2024-11-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Packaging
  • Food Industries
  • Collaboration with the FAO
CONT

Composite membranes are made from composite materials and usually prepared by depositing a polymer film on a porous substructure.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Emballages
  • Industrie de l'alimentation
  • Collaboration avec la FAO
DEF

Membrane composée de matériaux de nature différente.

OBS

CONT

This composite structure, called the lamina basalis or Bruch's membrane, lies between the pigmented epithelium of the retina and the capillary layer of the choroid.

French

Domaine(s)

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Plastic Materials
  • Synthetic Fabrics
DEF

[A] polymer [which is a] film containing nine billion pores per square inch.

CONT

The Gore-Tex membrane is a patented composite of two unique polymers. The first polymer, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene(ePTFE)... The second polymer is an oleophobic("oil heating") material...

OBS

Each pore [of the film] is 20,000 times smaller than a raindrop, but 700 times larger than a molecule of water. It is completely impervious to rain, snow and sleet and allows perspiration vapor to pass through.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
  • Matières plastiques
  • Textiles artificiels et synthétiques
DEF

Record 5 2004-02-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Synthetic Fabrics
DEF

A minute opening, orifice, aperture, perforation , or hole (usually, one imperceptible to the unaided eye), through which fluids (rarely solid bodies) pass or may pass.

CONT

The Gore-Tex membrane is a patented composite made from two unique materials. One of the components is pure expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene(ePTFE). This portion of the membrane contains nine billion pores per square inch. The pores are much smaller than a droplet of liquid water but much larger than a molecule of water vapor. Liquid water cannot pass through the membrane but moisture vapor can pass through.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Textiles artificiels et synthétiques
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Biotechnology
  • Morphology and General Physiology
CONT

Brite-EuRam projects in the field of biomaterials are looking at artificial complex organs, especially skin. Other areas of R&D could include creation of bioartificial liver or pancreas. At this stage, the goal is to produce a composite of biomaterial and cells. The biomaterial may act as a scaffold, such as in skin or in repair of tendons or nerves, or as a membrane and container, as for liver and pancreas. Problems arise when different cell types need to be included in the same ’bioartificial' organ, in an anatomically and biologically correct way.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biotechnologie
  • Morphologie et physiologie générale
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Law
CONT

Thin-film composite membranes catch more than 85% of the salt and bacteria. The backing material is made of a porous plastic film. A fine non-porous polyamide film(the semi-permeable membrane itself) is chemically bonded to this backing. Such composite membranes last years rather than months, and even the most omnivorous bacteria find them inedible.
