COMPRESSION STAGE [7 records]

Record 1 2022-12-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
CONT

In the region below the surface, snow compaction is thought to occur in three stages. In the first stage near the surface, compaction occurs by grain growth and rearrangement due to grain boundary sliding. In the second stage, compaction occurs through increasing overburden pressure inducing creep deformation and sintering. In the final stage, interconnected pores have closed off, and further compaction is caused by air bubble compression.

CONT

Pressed wool felt is a non-woven engineering fabric manufactured either solely from wool or from a wool and blended fibre mixture. Manufactured by means of compression, heat and moisture, it's construction depends upon the unique properties of the wool fibre.... This interlocking of fibres results in [a] structure that can be further enhanced with milling and hardening(this is the felting stage). The more the wool is felted, the firmer(denser) it becomes. The materials final hardness is in direct proportion to the amount of felting it has received.... the fabric is [then] dried under tension to stabilise it's manufactured thickness and width.

CONT

DEF

A heat exchanger used to cool the charge air of an internal combustion engine after it has been compressed by an exhaust driven turbocharger and/or mechanically driven blower.

OBS

Engine charge air coolers are often referred to as either intercoolers or aftercoolers depending upon their location, relative to the final compression stage, in the air induction system.

CONT

Air compressors used in compressed air systems are generally of the rotary-liquid type or the single or two stage piston type.... b. Piston Type Air Compressors.... This type of compressor has operating parts on a similar principle to a conventional gasoline operated motor utilizing a crank shaft, pistons and cylinders. In the two stage, the compression takes place in two distinct steps in separate cylinders.

CONT

A large defect in the femoral head, looking as though a bite had been taken out of it, seen in the late stage of aseptic necrosis. The appearance is due to fragmentation, compression, and resorption of necrotic bone complicating the vascular insufficiency. [From EISER, 1984, p. 304. ]
