[A] trap with an inlet channeled to the bottom of the trap body so the condensate enters underneath the inverted bucket[, and in which the] valve opens when the trap fills with condensate and discharges the condensate into the return line.

The discharge from the inverted bucket trap is intermittent and requires a differential pressure between the inlet and discharge of the trap to lift the condensate from the bottom of the trap to the discharge connection. Bucket traps are used for draining condensate and air from blast coils, unit heaters and steam heating coils. Inverted bucket traps are well suited for draining condensate from steam lines or equipment where an abnormal amount of air is to be discharged and where dirt may drain into the trap.

A device used in some vapor-steam heating systems to return condensation to the boiler under varying pressure conditions of operation up to the working limit of the boiler.

Boiler Return Trap or Alternating Receiver. This type of trap is used to return condensate to a low pressure boiler. The boiler return trap does not hold steam as do other types, but is an adaptation of the lifting trap. It is used in conjunction with a boiler to prevent flooding return mains when excess pressure prevents condensate from returning to the boiler by gravity. The boiler trap collects condensate and equalizes the boiler and trap pressure, enabling the condensate in the trap to flow back to the boiler by gravity.

The Hartford loop is a special arrangement of return piping at the boiler. Its purpose is to reduce the likelihood of an insignificant quantity of water creating a low water condition that can cause damage to a steam heating boiler. It came into general use in 1919 and was primarily designed for use with heating systems having gravity wet return. In effect, it consists of two loops of pipe forming two U-tubes. The first loop is around the boiler and the second loop is composed of the drip connection, the wet return, and a short riser called the loop riser.... The use of a Hartford loop is not recommended where the condensate is returned to the boiler by a condensate pump.

Steam heating systems... it is a two-pipe system when the heating unit has two separate pipe connections-one used for the steam supply and the other for the condensate return.

[Hot water heating systems] Two-pipe systems. For large installations the supply of hot water needs to be kept separate from that water which has been cooled by passing through a convector. To accomplish this one pipe is used to supply the hot water, which then empties into another pipe used for return. This type of system provides the water at as high a temperature as possible. The return may be classified as reverse return or direct return.

A steam trap operated by a float.

CONT

The discharge from the float trap is generally continuous. This type is used for draining condensate from steam headers, steam heating coils, and other similar equipment. When a float trap is used for draining a low pressure steam system, it should be equipped with a thermostatic air vent.

OBS

When enough condensate has drained(by gravity) into the trap body, the float is lifted which in turn lifts the pin off its seat and permits the condensate to flow into the return until the float has been sufficiently lowered to close the port. Temperature does not affect the operation of a float trap.

In a typical pulp and/or paper mill, about one-half of the process steam is used "indirectly" in tube banks, drying cylinders, and heating jackets. In these applications, the condensate is available for return to the boiler house. A condensate return system involves capital costs for pumps, tanks, traps and piping, but is easily justified because of heat credits and savings in raw water treatment. Where contamination of the condensate is possible(as, for example, with evaporators or black liquor heaters), some method of monitoring the condensate must be employed to prevent return of a fouled stream.

The return piping that carries the condensate accumulation back to the boiler and is installed below the level of the boiler water line is called a wet return. It is completely filled with water and does not carry air or steam. When the system is first filled with water or is cold, the pressure throughout the system is the same, or balances. Therefore, the water is at the same level in the boiler and drip connection as indicated by the boiler water line.

Other types of condensate return pumps are the rotary, screw, turbine and reciprocating pump.... the condensate pump has a capacity of 2. 5 to 3 times normal flow.
