Additionally, countries can deploy countermeasures to increase their missiles’ survivability against laser beams in the boost phase. For example, spinning missiles after take-off can prevent lasers from concentrating enough energy on one location to achieve a kill.... successfully mounting a condensed megawatt laser on a HALE UAV [high-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle] could be the "holy grail" of boost phase missile defense...

DEF

Any substance (as an aggregate of atoms or molecules), whether a gas, liquid, or solid, in a fine state of subdivision with particles too small to be visible in an ordinary optical microscope that is dispersed in a continuous gaseous, liquid, or solid medium and does not settle or settles very slowly (as the liquid droplets in fog, solid particles in smoke, bubbles in foam, or gold particles in ruby glass).

CONT

Many colloids occur naturally. Others can be prepared by breaking large pieces of material into smaller pieces, as with a colloid mill... Some colloids can be prepared by condensation methods, in which atoms or molecules are induced to aggregate from solution, or in which atoms or molecules are condensed from the vapor state. There are three important types of colloids : small solid particles having the same internal structure as the bulk solid phase(sulfur suspensions in water), aggregates formed from smaller molecules(soaps in water, and large molecules of colloidal size(proteins and high polymers).

Compare with "colloidal particle."

DEF

At particular temperature and pressure, state of moist air whose mixing ratio is such that the moist air can co-exist in neutral equilibrium with an associated condensed phase(liquid or solid) at the same temperature and pressure, the surface of separation being plane.

OBS

Usage has provided two closely related but importantly different conceptions of the term saturation (a) One is the condition in which the vapor pressure exerted by water vapor is equal to the saturation vapor pressure at the prevailing temperature. This definition implies the presence of a plane surface of pure liquid water or ice, and thus is a condition dependent upon the temperature only, irrespective of actual environment. Since, in nature, such a "plane surface of pure water" is rarely found and the physico-chemical environment of water vapor is anything but constant, this strict concept of saturation can be very misleading with regard to actual condensation processes; but the conservative base which this definition supplies is required as a comparison standard (as for relative humidity measurements). More specific terminology is often advisedly used, like "saturation with respect to water" or "saturation with respect to ice". (b) The other is the condition in which the vapor pressure of water vapor is equal to the equilibrium vapor pressure under the existing environmental conditions (temperature; and shape, size and composition of adjacent matter)... It should be clear that saturation should always be defined "with respect to" an intended environment, either standard (as in a above) or actual.

DEF

CONT

A certain class of ceramic and metallic materials can be manufactured by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method. Even though by now this process has included reaction systems of the solid-gas and solid-liquid types, the original work was directed towards the reactions investigated where not only the reactants but also the final products formed in the solid phase. These reactions are therefore generally referred to as gasless, solid-solid or condensed phase combustion reactions.

CONT

Condensed phase combustion is a complex phenomenon of theoretical and practical interest, in particular, as a method to synthesize materials. This combustion synthesis process involves a self-sustained combustion wave which propagates through initial reactants converting them into a desired product. In condensed phase combustion the initial reactants as well as final, and possibly intermediate products, remain in the condensed phase throughout the reaction. Though the combustion process occurs in a heterogeneous medium composed of reactive particles, typical models of condensed phase combustion treat the medium as homogeneous.

CONT

A deflagration analysis of porous energetic materials with two-phase flow and a multiphase sequential reaction mechanism.... A theoretical analysis for the unconfined deflagration of a porous energetic material is developed for a two-step global reaction mechanism that consists of the condensed-phase combustion of the reactive material to produce gas-phase intermediates, followed by a gas-phase reaction that produces final gas-phase products.

OBS

Combustion is a chemical reaction, it gives off heat and is self-sustaining. It can occur in a condensed-phase(glowing), a gas-phase(flame) or both. Fire results when a combustible material(fuel) in the presence of an oxidizing agent(oxygen) is heated to a critical temperature(ignition temperature).

The Combustion Integrated Rack(CIR), will be uniquely configured to support microgravity combustion research on board ISS. Combustion experiment equipment will be installed on-orbit in the CIR to customize it to perform many different experiments during the ten or more years that it will operate on board ISS. Studies of laminar flames, reaction kinetics, droplet and spray combustion, flame spread, fire and fire suppressants, condensed phase organic fuel combustion, turbulent combustion, soot and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and flame-synthesized materials are planned.

The powered racks are called the Fluids Integrated Rack (FIR), Combustion Integrated Rack (CIR), and Shared Accommodations Rack (SAR). The combustion and fluids disciplines share racks and mutually necessary hardware within FCF [Fluids and Combustion Facility] to dramatically reduce cost and effectively use ISS resources ... The CIR features a 100-liter combustion chamber surrounded by optical and other diagnostic packages including a gas chromatograph.
