CONFORMAL MAP [9 records]

Record 1 2012-05-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cartography
DEF

A conformal map projection in which the points on the sphere are projected onto a plane tangent to the sphere, having the point of projection at the opposite end of the diameter of the sphere that passes through the point of tangency with the plane.

Subject field(s)

DEF

A map projection, neither conformal nor equal area, on which the central geographic meridian is represented by a straight line, the other meridians are represented by curved lines, and the parallels are arcs of nonconcentric circles which have centers lying on the line that represents the central meridian and radii determined by the lengths of the elements of cones that are tangent along the parallels.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géographie mathématique
OBS

DEF

A conformal conic projection with two standard parallels, or a conformal conic map projection in which the surface of a sphere... is conceived as developed on a cone which intersects the sphere... at two standard parallels [and] the cone is then spread out to form a plane which is the map.

OBS

The Lambert projection (or, to be more precise, the Lambert Conformal Conic projection, but be advised that this complete name is rarely if ever used) is one of the most commonly used projections. As its full name implies, the Lambert projection is conformal, and thus it cannot be equivalent.

OBS

Lambert conformal projection; Lambert conformal conic projection; Lambert conformal conical projection; Lambert conformal conic; Lambert conformal conic map projection; Lambert orthomorphic conic map projection : terms used at Natural Resources Canada-Earth Sciences Sector.

Domaine(s)

  • Télédétection
  • Géographie mathématique
CONT

  • Navigation Instruments
CONT

Constant gyro headings generate great circle tracks, however, for the Lambert conformal map, map convergency is the product of a change in longitude and the constant of the cone of the map.

CONT

Subject field(s)

DEF

A conformal map projection in which the regular Mercator projection is rotated(transversed) 90 ° in azimuth, the central meridian corresponding to the line which represents the equator on the regular Mercator;...

OBS

... the characteristics as to scale are identical to those of the regular Mercator, except that the scale is dependent on distances east or west of the meridian instead of north or south of the equator.

Domaine(s)

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematical Geography
DEF

A conformal map projection of the cylindrical type. The equator is represented by a straight line true to scale; the geographic meridians are represented by parallel straight lines perpendicular to the line representing the equator; they are spaced according to their distance apart at the equator. The geographic parallels are represented by a second system of straight lines perpendicular to the family of lines representing the meridians.... Conformality is achieved by mathematical analysis, the spacing of the parallels being increased with increasing distance from the equator to conform with the expending scale along the parallels resulting from the meridians being represented by parallel lines.

OBS

Compare "transverse Mercator projection".

Domaine(s)

DEF
