Il est parfois impossible de pratiquer une étude instrumentale du champ visuel (enfants, malades alités). On doit alors recourir à l'examen par confrontation. L'examinateur se place face au sujet examiné, à 60 centimètres. L'œil droit de l'examinateur et l'œil gauche de l'examiné sont masqués (et inversement). Une boule blanche, dont le diamètre peut être différent, placée à l'extrémité d'une tige noire (boule de Morax) est déplacée d'une manière centripète dans un plan vertical situé à distance égale entre les deux sujets, dans les quatre quadrants (supéro-nasal) inféro-nasal, supéro-temporal et inféro-temporal). Le patient signale l'apparition du test.
