The development of a viable mass deacidification process has long been considered the answer to the problems of conservation in the library field. Acid, inherent in the untreated wood pulp, introduced into the paper in the manufacturing process, or caused from contact with polluted air, breaks the links in the cellulose polymer chains causing the fibers to break down; the paper becomes discolored and brittle, losing both permanence and durability very quickly.... Today suction table treatments are generally considered alternatives to standard paper conservation techniques. These would include flattening, stain reduction, lining, etc. The suction table is composed of a series of stainless steel meshes, that allow for air and moisture be pulled through by a vacuum. The table is covered by a Plexiglas dome and treatments are often carried out through four access portals. The engraving is made on paper by the mezzotint process. It is afterwards transferred to the glass by pressing the treated paper over the glass. The paper, pulled away, leaves the impression of the engraving on the glass which is then covered with mastic varnish. The glass is then painted with watercolour.
