La séquence accidentelle qui sous-tend ce concept de récupérateur peut se résumer ainsi. Suite à un accident par perte de réfrigérant primaire, il y a fusion du cœur du réacteur. Les matériaux en fusion progressent alors vers le fond de cuve où ils s'accumulent pour former un bain dont la température est d'environ 2500 à 3000 °C. Le corium, qui a conservé en son sein les éléments radioactifs non volatiles, s'échauffe sous l'effet de la puissance résiduelle. Si le refroidissement est insuffisant, notamment s'il est impossible de réinjecter de l'eau dans le circuit primaire, l'échauffement excessif peut entraîner le percement de la cuve. Dans cette hypothèse, la décharge de corium se fait dans le puits de cuve aménagé en un réceptacle depuis lequel on cherche à accumuler et à retenir de façon provisoire au moyen d'une porte fusible la totalité du corium en provenance de la cuve. Quand la porte fusible cède, l'étalement du corium se fait dans une chambre [...] exempte d'eau. L'idée maîtresse de l'absence d'eau à ce stade est d'éviter le risque d'une explosion vapeur. Enfin, après étalement, le corium est noyé sous eau de manière à favoriser un refroidissement de longue durée.
