CREST CONTROL [4 records]

Record 1 2024-03-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Blasting (Construction)
  • Blasting Work (Mining)
  • Explosives and Pyrotechnical Materials (Industries)
CONT

Buffer Blasting. Buffer blasting is possibly the most simple method of control blasting and involves a modification to the last row of the main blast pattern. Modifications are limited to reduced burden, spacing, and explosive loads. The aim is to limit ground shock from the blast. The method is usually employed in conjunction with some other control blasting technique, such as pre-splitting, and its results are quite economical. Buffer blasting can only be used by itself when the ground is fairly competent. It may produce minor crest fracturing or backbreak but the amount of damage is less than would be produced by the main production blast if no control blasting was used at all.

OBS

control blasting: Various techniques used to limit the amount of backbreak developed during the blasting phase of the excavation cycle by reducing the level of ground shock vibrations.

Domaine(s)
  • Dynamitage (Construction)
  • Travail aux explosifs (Exploitation minière)
  • Explosifs et artifices (Industries)
CONT

Record 2 1996-02-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
DEF

An excavated or natural channel, usually removed some distance from a dam, provided to permit the release of extraordinary flood flows or flood discharge beyond the capacity of the service spillway. Control is seldom furnished and a low embankment of earth may be used to allow the water surface of the reservoir to rise above the crest of the emergency spillway. If continued inflow causes overtopping of the embankment plug, it is intended that the plug shall wash away, releasing the excess water without endangering the main dam.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Barrages et chaussées
DEF

Évacuateur secondaire appelé à fonctionner exceptionnellement.

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Site Development
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Field Engineering (Military)
DEF

The point on the slope of a hill that will not allow any person or object to be silhouetted against the horizon and also allows full view of the slope below.

CONT

The military crest... is the point near the top of a slope or brow from which the entire slope below can be seen. This strategic vantage point has historically been vital for an army's control and defense of the high point and surrounding countryside(hence its name). The military crest is also a desirable building location because of the view it affords.... Furthermore, the military crest is an important point for locating structures that visually blend in with the landform.

CONT

The top of the slope is most exposed to the elements. The planner may exploit or create a land profile similar to the "military crest" of the artillery manual--an adaptation or modification of the slope to preserve or enhance the view while affording increased protection.

A control method in which a device on the crest of the spillway of a dam is used to raise or lower the crest with variations in flow of the stream. The device may consist of flashboards, a radial drum, a tilting gate, or a bear-trap crest.

French
