A crevasse splay is a geographical feature which forms when an overloaded stream breaks a natural or artificial levee and deposits sediment on a floodplain. This breach can cause large deposits that spread in a pattern similar to that of a river delta. In other words, coarser sediment is deposited first, close to the breach while finer sediment is carried farther to the edges of the crevasse splay. In cross section, the crevasse splay will result in graded deposits which may look like a Bouma sequence. 3, record 1, English, - crevasse%20splay
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Crevasse splays are essentially small lobate deltas forming within the framework of the larger delta. They consist of relatively thin, lens-like masses of sediment, showing small-scale prograding coarsening-upward sequences ... 4, record 1, English, - crevasse%20splay

As the rivers flow through these flooded wetlands, they deposit extensive levee and crevasse splay sediments along the length of the valley... Tributaries flowing into the valley develop fluvial-fan deltas along the margins of the valley. As a result, the alluvial fill of these wide valleys consists of mixed coarsening upward deltaic and crevasse splay deposits interbedded with fining upward channel deposits as well as organic-rich shales and coals. 6, record 2, English, - crevasse%2Dsplay%20deposit
