The crew module is the pressurized part of the Orion spacecraft, sometimes referred to as the capsule, where crew will live and work on their journey to the Moon and back. The crew module can accommodate four crew members for up to 21 days, and provides a safe habitat through launch, on-orbit operations, landing, and recovery. The crew module contains advances in life support, avionics, power systems, and advanced manufacturing techniques, and is the only portion of Orion that returns to Earth at the end of flights.

Lab(9 ISPRs-International Standard Payload Racks) and the [Japanese Experiment Module-JEM](5 ISPRs), a low-temperature water loop(0. 6-10 °C or 33-50 °F) is provided via a 1. 3 cm(0. 5 in.) line with a quick-disconnect. The maximum return temperature on this loop is 21 °C(70 °F). A pressure drop of 40 kPa(5. 8 psid) is allowed across the inlet and outlet of both water loop interfaces. Payloads can also dissipate small amounts of heat into the cabin air. Depending on the temperature conditions set by the crew, a minimum of 500 W can be dissipated into both the U. S. Lab and Columbus(complement of all payloads within the module). Negotiations are underway with Japan on the allowable heat dissipation into the JEM.

The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station’s initial propulsion and power. ... The U.S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U.S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia. ... The Zarya module is 41.2 feet long and 13.5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module’s 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes.

Although ATV [Automated Transfer Vehicle] will dock to the Russian Zvezda module, it will carry most of its dry payload for the US elements of the ISS [International Space Station]. At the launch site in Kourou, French Guiana, six weeks before flight, Jules Verne will be loaded with 1 300 kg of dry cargo out of the 5 500 kg maximum capacity. The Joint Airlock itself has two rooms, the "Equipment Lock" and the "Crewlock. "The Equipment Lock is similar to a locker room, in that it is the primary area where the crew members don and doff their spacesuits... It is also the primary area for servicing the spacesuits and stowing them. The Crewlock, which is separated from the Equipment Lock by a hatch, is where spacewalkers open the outer hatch and actually begin their excursions into space. It is similar in size to the shuttle's airlock. Although the Joint Airlock Module is only 20 feet(6. 1 meters) long, getting from one end to the other can be a slow process as astronauts prepare for their EVAs [Extravehicular Activities].

The Joint Airlock (also known as "Quest") is provided by the U.S. and provides the capability for ISS-based Extravehicular Activity (EVA) using either a U.S. Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) or Russian Orlon EVA suits. Before the launch of this airlock, EVAs were performed from either the U.S. Space Shuttle (while docked) or from the Transfer Chamber on the Service Module. Due to a variety of system and design differences, only U.S. space suits could be used from the Shuttle and only Russian suits could be used from the Service Module. The Joint Airlock alleviates this short term problem by allowing either (or both) spacesuit systems to be used.

The window is constructed of three panes of fused silica and a fourth protective kick pane made of glass laminate. From outboard to inboard, the panes are : OUTBOARD-An external debris pane that can be changed by an EVA astronaut if damaged. A redundant pressure pane. A primary pressure pane. A scratch or "kick" pane that protects the primary pressure pane from being damaged if the crew or equipment make contact with the window [and] provides a UV-IR coating to protect the crew members. When not in use, the window is protected by the kick pane on the inside, and by an external cover on the outside. The external cover can be rotated in or out of position from within the cabin by an astronaut using a hand crank.

Two spacewalking cosmonauts set up a "Strela, "or "Arrow, "cargo boom outside the Pirs airlock last November. That telescoping crane can be extended to the rear end of the Zvezda crew module. Mounted to the opposite side of Pirs, the Strela boom installed by Onufrienko and Walz is positioned so that it can be reeled out to the end of the Zarya space tug, which is hooked up to the U. S. side of the station. Both booms are capable of hoisting cargoes that weigh as much as three tons. The Commercial Protein Crystal Growth-H experiment consists of 1, 008 individual experiments contained in a High-Density Protein Crystal Growth Assembly. This assembly is then stored in the Commercial Refrigerator Incubator Module(CRIM) at 22 degrees Celsius(72 degrees Fahrenheit). The Space Station crew will install the CRIM into a locker in the Space Station EXPRESS Rack 4 in the U. S. Lab, activate the crystal growth experiments and conduct daily status checks. These daily checks consist of checking temperature readings and cleaning the air filter. When the payload is scheduled to return to Earth, the crew will deactivate the experiments and return the module.

The Automated transfer Vehicle (ATV) is the European Transportation system supporting the International Space Station. A detailed analytical cargo accommodation for each single cargo has to be performed in order to meet the NASA plan (Cargo Manifest). From the cargo accommodation point of view, the ATV consists of an unpressurized module and a pressurized module. Accommodation rules are given for the unpressurized, pressurized and overall cargo.
