Although ATV [Automated Transfer Vehicle] will dock to the Russian Zvezda module, it will carry most of its dry payload for the US elements of the ISS [International Space Station]. At the launch site in Kourou, French Guiana, six weeks before flight, Jules Verne will be loaded with 1 300 kg of dry cargo out of the 5 500 kg maximum capacity. Most of the dry cargo provided by NASA will be clothes, food, towels and wipes for the crew, logistics items such as batteries and spare parts for maintenance of the Station. This cargo will also include ESA [European Space Agency] experiments such as ANITA, which will constantly monitor the cabin air, and some Russian hardware to be added to the panels of the Station's Russian Service Module. 2, record 3, English, - dry%20cargo

The micro-WIS(Micro Wireless Instrumentation System) consists of tiny autonomous sensors for data acquisition... This HTD [Head-of-Train Telemetry Device] is designed to demonstrate the micro-WIS transmitter and recorder. One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available. 3, record 8, English, - micro%2Dwireless%20instrumentation%20system

Other life-science experiments use crew members as experimental subjects. One is a NASA "Autogenic Feedback" experiment, designed to investigate the extent to which prior training can help astronauts to use voluntary control to reduce the effects of space sickness. Discomfort and nausea can have serious effects on crew members’ effectiveness, especially during the first two days of a mission. Statistically, it seems to affect about 50 per cent of people selected for spaceflight. Three of the Spacelab 3 crew received pre-flight training in recognising and controlling the symptoms; a control group of two did not. All wear electrodes to record such parameters as heart and respiration rate, sweating, etc., plus accelerometers to monitor head and body movements : these seem to have a relationship to space sickness. 1, record 13, English, - autogenic%20feedback%20experiment
