Auxiliary systems. The majority of modern aircraft, primarily the large transport type, are equipped with certain systems which are not necessary for the actual operation and flight of the airplane but which are needed for the comfort and convenience of the crew and passengers and are required by Federal Aviation Regulations(FAR). Some of these systems are important for the safe operation of the aircraft under a variety of conditions, and some are designed to provide for emergencies. Systems not essential to the actual operation of the aircraft are commonly called auxiliary systems. Among such systems are air-conditioning, deicing and anti-icing, fire-warning and-extinguishing, oxygen, and water and waste systems. All these systems are needed for the safety and comfort of crew and passengers on high-altitude, long-range airplanes; hence it is important the technician have a good understanding of their operation and maintenance. 3, record 8, English, - auxiliary%20system

The Rotary Rocket Company is developing the Roton which is a fully reusable, single-stage-to-orbit, commercial launch vehicle. It will be piloted by a crew of two and is being designed to carry 7, 000 lbs to low-earth-orbit. The Roton will takeoff vertically like a conventional rocket powered by a new rotary engine burning liquid oxygen and jet fuel. Once its payload is delivered to orbit, the Roton returns to Earth via a nose-mounted rotor which is deployed in space and used during reentry to help stabilize the craft. Once in the atmosphere, the vehicle will glide like an autorotating helicopter and land vertically, assisted by rotor tip thrusters. 7, record 10, English, - Roton

... AlliedSignal has changed the way it manufactures its highly accurate gyros in an effort to stretch their service lives to prevent a future shutdown. But the basic design of the gyros has not changed, since they are about twice as accurate as the next-best gyros available, according to Hubble Program Manager John Campbell. The problem is the tiny leads that carry power to the gyro rotors. Sunk in a thick damping fluid, the hair-like wires corrode over time and break. The six new gyros Discovery's crew will install retain the fine power leads, but the damping fluid was loaded into the gyros in a manner that engineers hope kept oxygen out of the system, reducing the risk of oxidation. 5, record 12, English, - damping%20fluid

2, record 13, French, - casque

The Extravehicular Mobility Unit(EMU) consists of an integrated Space Suit Assembly(SSA) and Life Support Subsystem(LSS) with other crew items designed for Extravehicular Activity(EVA) outside the shuttle Space Transportation System(STS) orbiter or ISS.
