The Advanced Protein Crystallisation Facility for Spacehab and the ISS (APCF) ... was conceived to perform screening experiments under reduced gravity and temperature controlled conditions, with some diagnostic capabilities, during a shuttle mission. APCF is a locker-type facility which can be accommodated in the middeck of the US Space Shuttle or in a locker of the Spacehab module installed in the cargo bay of the Shuttle or in a drawer rack of the International Space Station.

CONT

The hardware consists of a process chamber, power and data electronics, the camera electronics, optical and video system, thermal control system, and tape recorder. The APCF is designed to run automatically, but the crew can verify the status of the facility by reading the LEDs [Light Emitting Diodes] mounted on the front panel.

Ensuite, la dialyse qui consiste en la séparation d'une solution de protéines et une solution saline au moyen d'une membrane. Enfin, la diffusion de vapeur suivant laquelle des cristaux se forment à l'intérieur d'une gouttelette de solution protéinique tandis que le solvant contenu dans la gouttelette se diffuse dans un réservoir.

The derrickman or other crew member works on this board while casing is being run in a well. It may be simply a wooden board or a fabricated assembly of steel girders floored with antiskid material and powered electrically to raise or lower it to the desired level for stabbing pipe. A stabbing board serves the same purpose as a monkeyboard, or safety platform, but the former is only a temporary structure whereas the latter are permanent structures.

The SEMP ship Yamato 1 is packed with the huge power and refrigeration systems needed to run it. A ten-man crew squeezes into a small cockpit at the front. Despite these limitations, the Japanese are hoping that SEMP systems will become smaller and more powerful leading to a new generation of fast passenger ferries and cargo ships. Unlike today's ships they will be highly manoeuvrable : by reversing the polarity of both thrusters, a SEMP ship should be able to come rapidly to a halt. Reversing just one drive would make it turn on a yen. It would also be eerily quiet. This has prompted the America's IEEE to try to fit SEMP drives into a submarine-echoes, as it were, of the "caterpillar drive" used by the silent submarine in the film "The Hunt for Red October".
