The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station’s initial propulsion and power. ... The U.S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U.S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia. ... The Zarya module is 41.2 feet long and 13.5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module’s 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes. 6, record 6, English, - Zarya%20control%20module

The micro-WIS(Micro Wireless Instrumentation System) consists of tiny autonomous sensors for data acquisition... This HTD [Head-of-Train Telemetry Device] is designed to demonstrate the micro-WIS transmitter and recorder. One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available. 3, record 27, English, - micro%2Dwireless%20instrumentation%20system

The Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator(SPDM) is an essential tool for maintaining and servicing the Space station. With its dual-arm design providing added flexibility, the SPDM will remove and replace smaller components; on the Station exterior, where precise handling : is required. It will be equipped with lights, video equipment, a tool platform and four tool holder. The SPDM can perform dexterous tasks by sensing various forces and moments on the payload. In response, it can automatically compensate its movements to ensure the payload is manipulated smoothly. With its two arms, the SPDM will load and unload objects, use robotic tools, attach and detach covers and install various units of the Space Station. It will either be attached to the end of Canadarm2 or ride independently on the Mobile Base System [MBS] and have Canadarm2 deliver equipment to it for servicing. It also has four cameras that will provide the crew inside the Station with additional views of the work areas. Like Canadarm2 and the MBS, the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator will be controlled by the crew inside the International Space Station. This system will allow the crew to perform many of the tasks that would otherwise require an astronaut to perform during a demanding spacewalk. 5, record 28, English, - special%20purpose%20dexterous%20manipulator

5, record 28, French, - manipulateur%20agile%20sp%C3%A9cialis%C3%A9

The IH will support single- and multi-generation experiments that have approximate external dimensions of 13.5 cm (L) x 2.25 cm (D) x 7.0 cm (H) each. The flies will live in two chevron-shaped container elements. These containers can be divided into two parts using the internal food cylinders; this yields two 55 ml containers that can support up to 100 Drosophila through to egg-laying. Alternatively, the containers can be left undivided, which yields a single 110 ml volume that supports up to 200 Drosophila. ... The two insect containers reside in the science element portion of the IH. The science element consists of two environmentally controlled "drawers." Each drawer contains a centrifuge that can provide up to 2G. Each centrifuge will hold six insect containers. PMA-2[, ] the second unit was temporarily attached to Unity before launch and provides the initial docking interface for Shuttle missions with ISS [International Space Station]. One end is attached to Unity by a Passive Common Berthing Mechanism, while the other end uses an Androgynous Peripheral Attach System to connect with the Shuttle external airlock and docking system. This unit has a hatch and an 8-inch view port. Attached to the exterior of PMA-2 are MDM [Multiplexer/Demultiplexer] computers, providing early command and control of the Unity node. This allows the Shuttle crew to control the Shuttle-end PMA-2 docking mechanism from the orbiter's aft flight deck. Extra Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitor ... The purpose of EVARM is to carry out flight experiments to investigate and characterize the doses received by different parts of an astronauts body (e.g., skin, eyes, and blood-forming organs) during an EVA. The doses will be analyzed with respect to the time and position of the EVA as well as the orbit, altitude, and attitude of the Station. EVARM is designed for use with the NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or spacesuit, worn by both Space Station and Space Shuttle crewmembers during Station operations. The experiment consists of a storage/badge reader unit and 12 badges-a set of three each for up to four spacewalkers. The sets are designated EV-1, EV-2, EV-3 and EV-4, corresponding to the designation of each potential spacewalker. When not in use, the badges are placed in the storage-reader box, which is stored in the Human Research Facility payload rack. The badge contains a silicon chip specially designed by Thomson-Nielsen-called a Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistor(MOSFET)-that continuously measures total radiation dosage and a connector that plugs into the badge reader. The reader that can download badge is shown placed in a pocket in the lower left leg of an astronaut liquid cooling garment. Badges also are placed in the front torso and fabric communications cap of the spacesuit undergarment(NASA/JSC). During normal operations, the Station crew will record the background radiation dosage on each badge and transmit it to the ground every week. Shortly before a spacewalk by Station or Shuttle crew members, the crew will measure the radiation dosage of each badge to be used in the spacewalk. A set of three badges will be inserted into pockets sewn into the front torso and front leg areas of the liquid cooling undergarment and the top of the fabric communications cap of each spacesuit. Those locations were selected because of the radiation hazard to sensitive soft tissues such as eyes and internal organs, as well as the hazard to the skin on the arms and legs, which are not as well shielded as the torso. Shortly after the spacewalk, the crew will plug each badge set into the badge reader. They will later transfer the data to the Human Research Facility laptop computer for transmission to the payload team on the ground. 6, record 50, English, - extra%20vehicular%20activity%20radiation%20monitor

Kibo's Debris Shield. The International Space Station(ISS) wall is designed to protect the ISS and its crew from space debris. A debris shield is adopted for this particular purpose. A famous astronomer, Fred Whipple, devised this shield, so it is called a Whipple Shield. The idea is to attach a layer of thin aluminum plate outside the wall. When a space debris impacts this outer plate, the kinetic energy of the space debris is converted to heat. This heat creates a hole in the outer plate. However, the debris will evaporate or disintegrate to small particles consisting of gas, liquid and solids and will no longer be able to significantly damage the wall.... a stuffed-shield is adopted on the wall of the front side of Kibo, covering an area of 150 degrees. A stuffed shield binds several kinds of textile layers similar to a bulletproof vest between itself and the wall. This is a reinforced Whipple shield. 2, record 53, English, - debris%20shield

A Crew Equipment Interface Test (CEIT) ... The CEIT is a test conducted two to three months prior to a shuttle launch. Astronauts who will be the on-orbit users of the flight hardware verify that there are no interface problems between that hardware and the astronaut users. Astronauts are mostly trained at Johnson Space Center, whereas the flight hardware is located at Kennedy Space Center. The CEIT provides the astronauts with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the flight hardware. During this test, fit checks are made between flight hardware that have not yet been verified. Fit checks with EVA tools and hardware planned to be handled during EVA are also conducted. Training that is difficult to conduct using mockups are also conducted. 3, record 77, English, - crew%20equipment%20interface%20test

... the Kurs automated docking system on Zarya controls the docking with Zvezda, which will serve as the passive "target" during the docking. Should the automated docking system fail, Russia would launch two cosmonauts to the station on a Soyuz about 15 days later. The final phase of rendezvous operations begins about three hours prior to Atlantis’ docking with the ISS [International Space Station]. Atlantis will approach the ISS from below, in what is referred to as a plus-R bar approach, to minimize the effects of jet thruster firings on the station and its solar arrays. About 40 minutes before the terminal initiation burn(Ti burn) when Atlantis moves within 135, 000 feet of the station, the shuttle's rendezvous radar system is activated to provide supplemental navigation information. Prior to initiating the Ti burn, the crew will power on the ODS [Orbital Docking System] and activate Atlantis's docking lights. A series of course correction burns will bring Atlantis to a point almost directly below and behind the station, at which point Commander Ken Cockrell initiates the manual portion of his approach to the ISS. Atlantis will intercept the R-bar about 700 feet below the station. Cockrell will slowly move Atlantis to a point about 600 feet below the station before performing a 180 degree yaw maneuver to position Atlantis in a "tail forward" attitude for the final approach and docking. 3, record 86, English, - rendezvous
