The Simplified Aid For EVA Rescue(SAFER) is a propulsive crew self-rescue device, worn by astronauts when conducting an extravehicular activity(EVA, or space walk) on the International Space Station(ISS) or while the Space Shuttle is docked to the Russian Mir space station. SAFER is a "mini-jetpack" that attaches to the backpack of the space suit. If an EVA astronaut accidentally becomes untethered and drifts away, he can activate SAFER and fly back to the space craft. SAFER was designed and developed by a team of engineers and EVA experts at NASA-Johnson Space Center.

Micro Craft's "Small" Lift Augmented Ducted Fan Air Vehicle(SLADF) has many advantages as a small UAV. The vehicle system can be designed to suit a number of performance requirements and is highly scaleable. The shroud(duct) provides unparalleled ground crew safety when contrasted to conventional open rotor designs. The small size of the SLADF permits operation aboard ships, on the ground, in urban areas, or in forested or other confined areas typical of tactical situations while enhancing survivability during flight. With a small footprint for both flight operations and stowage, valuable launch space is also optimized.

The Extravehicular Mobility Unit(EMU) consists of an integrated Space Suit Assembly(SSA) and Life Support Subsystem(LSS) with other crew items designed for Extravehicular Activity(EVA) outside the shuttle Space Transportation System(STS) orbiter or ISS. The NASA EMU provides life support functions, such as oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, a pressurized enclosure, temperature control and micrometeoroid protection, so astronauts can leave their shirtsleeve environment and work effectively in space.

OBS

Although the term space suit is sometimes used to designate the "extravehicular mobility unit" [EMU], "space suit" is, in fact, synonymous with "space suit assembly" which is a component of the EMU.

OBS

Environmental Control Systems Trainer. Additional training in the operation of the environmental control system was provided by the environmental control systems trainer which was a heavy shell mock-up with a prototype spacecraft environmental system. The device used was delivered to NASA in November 1960 and installed in a man-rated vacuum chamber at the U. S. Naval Air Crew Equipment Laboratory in Philadelphia(fig. 10-1(1)). During December of 1960 and January of 1961, the astronauts participated in a program of system familiarization that included being exposed to a simulated reentry heat pulse and approximately 2 hours of the expected postlanding temperature. During these runs, the astronauts wore the pressure suits and became familiar with function of the suits when associated with the environmental control system. However, since a provision had been made for simulating the suit function in the procedures trainer, this type of training was not considered essential This was particularly true since the astronauts received further first-hand familiarization to the environmental control system by participating in the preflight checkout of the spacecraft environmental control system at the launch site.
