CREW SYSTEM [100 records]

Record 1 2026-06-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Launching and Space Maneuvering
CONT

Previous missions to the moon—Apollo 8, 10 and 11—all flew free-return trajectories, or trajectories in which the spacecraft would loop around the Moon and return to Earth if, for any reason, insertion into lunar orbit did not take place.

CONT

The role of the SLS [space launch system] rocket was to bring Orion into space. It performed multiple manoeuvres to raise its orbit around Earth and placed the crew on a lunar free return trajectory in which Earth's gravity naturally pulled Orion back home after flying by the Moon.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Lancement et manœuvres dans l'espace
CONT

CONT

The primary aims for human-rated launchers are to carry the astronauts safely to their destination, and back again to Earth.... These are quite different requirements from those for an unmanned spacecraft launch system. Except in a very few cases, for these there is no need to bring the spacecraft back to Earth, and the consequences of an accident, while expensive, are not tragic. Historically the requirements for human rating were not specific. Basically, a human-rated launcher had to be demonstrated to be reliable, usually by several unmanned flights, during which all the systems on which the survival of the crew depended were tested, and found to work successfully.

During each lunar mission, the SLS [space launch system] will launch the crew in Orion to space and help set them on course to venture to the Moon. The Aircraft to Satellite Data Relay(ASDAR) programme is sponsored by an International meteorological group in order to augment the collection of upper air meteorological data, and thereby improve the accuracy of global weather forescasting. It has been developed by Matra Marconi Space, UK in collaboration with the WMO to enable aircraft to generate and transmit real-time meteorological reports via geostationary meteorological satellites for global relay. It is an automated system offering significant advantages, including reduced crew responsibility delays and errors. ASDAR, operating in conjunction with meteorological satellites, has proved to be a versatile tool in obtaining meteorological data automatically from flights over both oceans and continents, especially over areas not serviced by meteorological stations. In addition, during the ascent and descent phases of the aircraft, observations at regular pressure intervals provide a detailed vertical atmospheric temperature profile near the airports. The meteorological data provided by this system has proved to be very useful for improving the weather forecasting service.

EXPRESS Rack Simulator. The ERS located in the PSC [Payload Support Center] is composed of three racks. The first is the EXPRESS Rack Mock-up, the second is the data acquisition system rack and the third is the water cooling rack. In addition to being able to accommodate payload that would mechanically interface with the 8/2 ER configuration, the rack will also accommodate different size ISIS drawers. There is a possibility that one of the CSA payloads will use a 12-PU drawer. For this reason the configuration of the EXPRESS Rack Mock-up was chosen to be 4/6, i. e. 4 MDL [Mid-Deck Storage Locker] and 6 ISIS [International Sub-rack Interface Standard] drawers. Essentially, the CSA rack is the bottom portion of the ER with 4 drawers added on the bottom. This configuration will permit the accommodation of single, double and quad MDL as well as 4-PU, 8-PU and 12-PU ISIS drawers. The ERS has the same mechanical interface and front panel layout than the EXPRESS Rack to provide higher fidelity during training for the ISS crew. This also provides a better verification environment. The ERS provides 28V to the payloads rated at 5, 10, 15 or 20 Amps but does not include the RIC or other ER equipment. This is why a Suitcase Simulator will be used to communicate with the payload in the rack.

The micro-WIS(Micro Wireless Instrumentation System) consists of tiny autonomous sensors for data acquisition... This HTD [Head-of-Train Telemetry Device] is designed to demonstrate the micro-WIS transmitter and recorder. One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available.

The Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator(SPDM) is an essential tool for maintaining and servicing the Space station. With its dual-arm design providing added flexibility, the SPDM will remove and replace smaller components; on the Station exterior, where precise handling : is required. It will be equipped with lights, video equipment, a tool platform and four tool holder. The SPDM can perform dexterous tasks by sensing various forces and moments on the payload. In response, it can automatically compensate its movements to ensure the payload is manipulated smoothly. With its two arms, the SPDM will load and unload objects, use robotic tools, attach and detach covers and install various units of the Space Station. It will either be attached to the end of Canadarm2 or ride independently on the Mobile Base System [MBS] and have Canadarm2 deliver equipment to it for servicing. It also has four cameras that will provide the crew inside the Station with additional views of the work areas. Like Canadarm2 and the MBS, the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator will be controlled by the crew inside the International Space Station. This system will allow the crew to perform many of the tasks that would otherwise require an astronaut to perform during a demanding spacewalk.

S1-Truss. Dimensions : 13. 7 meters x 4. 6 meters x 1. 8 meters(45 feet x 15 feet x 6 feet) [;] Weight : 14, 124 kilograms(31, 137 pounds). The S1 Truss, the first starboard truss segment, was attached to the starboard side of the S0 Truss Oct. 10, 2002. The S1 Truss provides structural support for the Active Thermal Control System, Mobile Transporter and one Crew and Equipment Translation Aid cart. The cart is manually operated by a spacewalker and can also be used as a work platform. The cooling system is like the one in a car radiator except that it uses 99. 9 percent pure ammonia, compared to 1 percent in household products. The Thermal Radiator Rotary Joint rotates the three radiator structures in a 105-degree span either way to keep the three radiators panels in the shade; it also transfers power and ammonia to the radiators. The S1 Truss also has mounts for cameras and lights, as well as antenna support equipment for S-band communications equipment.

The ISS microgravity acceleration environment consists of two regimes : the quasi-steady environment and the vibratory/transient environment; therefore, the measurement of the microgravity acceleration environment is best accomplished by two accelerometer systems. In the United States Laboratory Module, the measurement of these two regimes is accomplished by the Space Acceleration Measurement System-II(SAMS-II) and the Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System(MAMS). The vibratory/transient environment, consisting of vehicle, crew, and equipment disturbances and covering the frequency range 0. 01-300 Hz, will be measured by the SAMS-II.

Endeavour is outfitted with a Regenerative Carbon Dioxide Removal System that may be used in tandem with Lithium Hydroxide(LioH) canisters to remove carbon dioxide from the crew cabin atmosphere. The regenerative system, if used alone, would eliminate the need to carry extensive amounts of LioH canisters for a long flight. Currently, the crew must change out LioH canisters daily as part of spacecraft housekeeping. The regenerative system works by removing the CO2 and then releasing it to space through a vent. The new system will not be used alone for Endeavour's first flight, but will be tested.

... AlliedSignal has changed the way it manufactures its highly accurate gyros in an effort to stretch their service lives to prevent a future shutdown. But the basic design of the gyros has not changed, since they are about twice as accurate as the next-best gyros available, according to Hubble Program Manager John Campbell. The problem is the tiny leads that carry power to the gyro rotors. Sunk in a thick damping fluid, the hair-like wires corrode over time and break. The six new gyros Discovery's crew will install retain the fine power leads, but the damping fluid was loaded into the gyros in a manner that engineers hope kept oxygen out of the system, reducing the risk of oxidation.

Gyroscope damping is introduced by making the coupling pin slightly eccentric.

The final phase of rendezvous operations begins about three hours prior to Atlantis’ docking with the ISS [International Space Station]. Atlantis will approach the ISS from below, in what is referred to as a plus-R bar approach, to minimize the effects of jet thruster firings on the station and its solar arrays. About 40 minutes before the terminal initiation burn(Ti burn) when Atlantis moves within 135, 000 feet of the station, the shuttle's rendezvous radar system is activated to provide supplemental navigation information. Prior to initiating the Ti burn, the crew will power on the ODS [Orbiter Docking System] and activate Atlantis's docking lights.
