When fuel is automatically transferred from the tail trim tank or center tank, it goes into the lower of the wing tanks and tends to mask a fuel imbalance. Switching the fuel transfer to manual makes the crew more aware of what the system is doing.

To accomplish these aims, we need to create a long-term crew return capability to complement and augment the Soyuz vehicles now provided by our Russian partners. This Ku-Band communication system will eventually allow the transfer of scientific data and video from the research conducted on the ISS [International Space Station] Laboratory module to Earthbound investigators and science experts participating in NASA's efforts to advance the growing field of Telescience.... High Definition TV(HDTV) images... will come directly into the High Rate Frame Multiplexer and High Rate Modem provided by Motorola and will be transmitted over Ku-Band link to Earth... ISS crew members will be able to observe experiments in space. That means it will not be necessary to physically return all research to Earth for analysis before running the next space experiment.

The Orbiter Docking System(ODS)... provided a means to connect and disconnect the shuttle with the Russian Space Station Mir. It is now used on the International Space Station(ISS). The ODS also allows for transfer of crew and equipment between the shuttle and the ISS [International Space Station]. One of the major components of the ODS is the Russian androgynous peripheral docking assembly(APDA), which automatically docks the shuttle after contact is made. For ISS missions, the ODS is a fully functional airlock complete with spacesuit services and new communications.
