This disease starts out as a black to purple leaf spot. As the disease progresses, the fungus works its way to the plant's base and attacks the roots and crown. Basal tissues near the ground become dark brown and rot. This stage is called melting out because the grass gradually thins and "melts out" the diseased area. The turf appears yellowish, thin and shabby with irregular patches of dead grass. When these areas are raked, the dead grass plants are easily removed.

The term crown as generally used in horticulture designates that part of a plant at the surface of the ground from which new shoots are produced. In trees or shrubs with a single trunk, the crown is principally a point of location near the ground surface marking the general transition zone between stem and root. In herbaceous perennials, the crown is the part of the plant from which new shoots arise annually. The crown of herbaceous perennials consists of many branches, each being the base of the current season's stem, which originated from the base of the preceding year's branch.

[In] base metal mines(...) a large proportion of the ore reserves is found in pillars left between previously mined stopes. These pillars are usually mined using the undercut-and-fill method which is especially suited to unstable ground conditions. Starting at the top of the mining zone the ore is removed in horizontal slices and replaced by backfill to sustain the walls of the adjacent stopes. A wooden mat braced by posts is used to support the backfill so that the ore underneath can be removed.(...) In one mine, the conventional undercut-and-fill technique was modified by suspending the wooden mat on rock bolts anchored to the crown pillar, rather than supporting it on posts.
