Virtual reality(VR) has been an area of research for over 40 years yet only recently has it begun to achieve public acceptance. One key to this has been the development of "cinematic virtual reality"(CVR) where media fidelity approaches that found in feature film. Unlike traditional VR, CVR limits the level of control users have within the environment to choosing viewpoints rather than interacting with the world itself. This means that CVR production arguably represents a new type of filmmaking.

Cinematic virtual reality (cinematic VR) is one of the emerging mediums alongside virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) with the production of more advanced head mounted displays (HMD) headsets and 360 cameras. It can be argued that cinematic VR and VR are the same medium, both utilising virtual environments (VEs) and HMD headsets with the major differences being primarily in interactivity. Cinematic VR draws heavily from the film industry while VR draws from the games industry.

The CVR [cockpit voice recorder] installed on SWR 111 [Swissair flight 111] employed a continuous-loop magnetic tape of 30 minutes duration. The earliest information on the SWR 111 CVR was recorded approximately 15 minutes before the unusual smell was noted by the crew. Crew conversations and cockpit sounds prior to the beginning of the CVR recording may have provided substantial insight into any initiating or precursor events that led to the accident.

The FDR is a Sundstrand. The recording lasts approximately 25 hours, during which time 43 flight parameters are registered.

Il y a actuellement deux types d'enregistreurs réglementaires : Le CVR («Cockpit Voice Recorder» - enregistreur phonique) enregistre en boucle, sur trente ou cent vingt minutes, l'environnement acoustique du poste de pilotage (les échanges entre les pilotes ou avec les contrôleurs, les bruits ou les alarmes sonores). Le FDR («Flight Data Recorder» - enregistreur de paramètres) enregistre en boucle et sur vingt-cinq heures les valeurs de certains paramètres significatifs (vitesse, altitude, fonctionnement des moteurs, pilote automatique, position des gouvernes, des commandes de vol...). Selon l'âge et le type de l'aéronef le nombre de paramètres enregistrés chaque seconde varie de cinq à plus de mille.
