Systems known... distribute content decryption keys in encrypted form to a tamper-resistant cryptographic unit connected to(or part of) the user's playback device.... Because smartcards and other tamper-resistant cryptographic hardware commonly used to implement the cryptographic unit often have limited performance and bandwidth, the cryptographic unit is often used to generate short-lived subkeys from the main content decryption key. These subkeys are then transmitted to a less secure portion of the system, such as the main playback device, and used to decrypt the content itself. The security of the system thus depends on the security of the cryptographic unit. If the cryptographic unit is compromised, attackers can determine the decryption keys and algorithms and use these to access content without authorization(e. g. by emulating an authorized cryptographic unit and/or the entire playback device). 3, record 10, English, - cryptographic%20unit

Secret key cryptography requires both parties to pre-arrange the sharing of the single key that is used for both encryption and decryption. If the reason for using encryption is due to the lack of security of the communication channel(e. g. a computer network), it stands to reason that one should not send the secret key along that same channel where anyone could copy it and decrypt all one's encrypted data. 1, record 16, English, - communication%20channel

1, record 16, French, - voie%20de%20communication

Cipher block chaining(CBC) is a mode of operation for a block cipher(one in which a sequence of bits are encrypted as a single unit or block with a cipher key applied to the entire block). Cipher block chaining uses what is known as an initialization vector(IV) of a certain length. One of its key characteristics is that it uses a chaining mechanism that causes the decryption of a block of ciphertext to depend on all the preceding ciphertext blocks. As a result, the entire validity of all preceding blocks is contained in the immediately previous ciphertext block. 1, record 17, English, - cipher%20block%20chaining
