DEFLECTION TEMPERATURE [8 records]

Record 1 2013-04-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Rheology
  • Strength of Materials
  • Plastic Materials
DEF

The temperature at which a test specimen will deflect a given distance under a given load in flexure under specified conditions of test.

OBS

heat distortion temperature: Formerly, this property was called "heat distortiontemperature," a term that is now deprecated.

OBS

deflection temperature under load : term and definition standardized by the International Organization for Standardization(ISO).

Key term(s)
  • load deflection temperature

Domaine(s)
  • Mesures et analyse (Sciences)
  • Rhéologie
  • Résistance des matériaux
  • Matières plastiques
DEF

Record 2 2011-11-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
DEF

The effect that the varying topography has on atmospheric circulations.

OBS

Deflection of air flow by mountains lifts air, resulting in cloud formation. Mountains also block or disturb atmospheric circulations and are regions of Earth-atmosphere momentum transfer. Topography also has an orographic effect on climate by influencing precipitation and temperature.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Climatologie
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
DEF

Record 3 2005-02-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
DEF

A pyrheliometer of the bimetallic type used to measure the intensity of direct solar radiation.

OBS

The radiation is measured in terms of the angular deflection of a blackened bimetallic strip that is exposed to the direct solar beams. In its original form the instrument was also responsive to ambient temperature variations. However, modifications have been introduced that eliminate this source of error.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Stations, instruments et équipements météorologiques
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorology
  • Thermodynamics
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
DEF

Convection caused by mechanical forces, such as those arising from air motion over a rough or sloping surface.

CONT

Convection... is a principal means of energy transfer. Distinction is made between free convection(gravitational or buoyant convection), motion caused only by density differences within the fluid; and forced convection, motion induced by mechanical forces such as deflection by a large-scale surface irregularity, turbulent flow caused by friction at the boundary of a fluid, or motion caused by any applied pressure gradient. Free and forced convection are not necessarily exclusive processes. On a windy day with overcast sky, the heat exchange between ground and air is an example of forced convection. On a sunny day with a little wind where the ground temperature rises, both kinds of convection take place.

French

Domaine(s)

  • Thermodynamique
  • Mécanique des fluides et hydraulique (Physique)
DEF

Subject field(s)

DEF

Convection caused by density differences within the air.

CONT

Free convection is the rising of heated air and the sinking of cooler air without the need of external forces.

Subject field(s)
  • Corporate Security
  • Security Devices
  • Fire Warning Devices
DEF

A heat detection device that uses a sensing element comprised of two metal strips having a different coefficient of expansion. The element deflects in opposite directions depending on the temperature to which it is exposed. Element deflection beyond a preset range results in an alarm.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sécurité générale de l'entreprise

CONT
