DEGAUSSING SHIP [6 records]

Record 1 2019-07-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Minesweeping and Minehunting
  • Electromagnetism
CONT

The degaussing facility records a ship's magnetic field as it passes over the degaussing range and notifies the ship as to what adjustments must be made to the degaussing coils on board the ship(with the exception of submarines which have none) in order to reduce the ship's magnetic field to a safe operational level.

  • Magnetism
CONT

The application of [a] degaussing system started during the World War II to prevent the naval ships from magnetic mines and torpedoes. When the ship used to come near a magnetic mine or a magnetic torpedo, the magnetic field of the ship used to actuate the firing mechanism and cause the mine or torpedo [to] explode. Thus, degaussing systems were installed to counteract the ship's magnetic field by cancelling the changes in earth's field around the hull of the ship.

Les navires [...] ont besoin d'une protection pour mener des opérations dans une zone de danger mines où pourraient se trouver des mines magnétiques à influence. Pour cela, ils on recours à leur système de démagnétisation [...]

English

Subject field(s)
  • Naval Mines
CONT

Ships and their crews stand a greater chance of survival if they can avoid being detected by weapons activated by a ship's electromagnetic field. DRDC [Defence R&D Canada] has proposed a new methodology – based on ship degaussing – which decomposes the ship's total magnetization into components, each one related to the orientation of the degaussing coils.

CONT

CONT

[British scientists] then invented a "degaussing girdle" around a ship, a band of wiring around the hull, energised by an electric current which reversed polarity and neutralised the ship's magnetism. With this system working efficiently, a vessel could pass over a mine without exploding it.

OBS

As opposed to degaussing, deperming is the process used to permanently reduce the magnetic condition of a ship by means of electric coils temporarily wound around a ship's structure. It is normally done while the ship is in dry dock or at a deperming range.
