DEGRADATION ZONE [10 records]

Record 1 2017-01-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • General Scientific and Technical Vocabulary
CONT

An overoxygenation of a zone or of a medium may indeed cause an activation of combustion phenomena, resulting in a degradation of some materials such as electric motors.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Vocabulaire technique et scientifique général
CONT

En plus de son utilisation dans des réacteurs biologiques proprement dits sous oxygène (éventuellement associés à des réacteurs travaillant à l'air atmosphérique), l'oxygène pur peut être mis en œuvre à des seules fins de suroxygénation.

The Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Insular Coastal Dynamics-(ICoD) forms part of a network of specialised Centres pertaining to the Open Partial Agreement of the Council of Europe on Major Natural and Technological Hazards. While the majority of the specialised Centres belonging to the OPA specialise in dealing with geomorphological disasters, those based in Malta and Monaco address marine-related issues. ICoD was established in 1988 within the framework of the "Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Marine Contamination Hazards" where it initially addressed marine degradation in general; it has subsequently re-oriented its objectives and activities towards a greater focus on the interactive processes which occur at the coastal zone and in particular, of insular areas.

Subject field(s)
  • Pulp and Paper
DEF

The introduction of cool wash liquor to the bottom zone of a Kamyr continuous digester in order to cool the pulp going to the discharge devices. This eliminates fiber degradation if blown at higher digester temperature.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pâtes et papier
CONT

Fluidized zone mixers are capable of preparing a homogenous mix independent of particle size, shape or density. The unique agitation ensures rapid yet gentle blending, short mixing cycles, low operating costs, minimal product degradation and one of the highest production capacities of any mixer type.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Water Pollution
  • Water Treatment (Water Supply)
CONT

Zones of Water Pollution. Discharge or mixing zone is where pollutants enter the stream or the river. If the waste is dark, it will make the water dark, increase its temperature and subsequently oxygen levels will drop. The rate of discharge should not be stronger than flow of the stream. In zone of degradation oxygen levels drop from BOD(biological/biochemical oxygen demand). Zone of active decomposition is characterized by the following changes : 1) dissolved oxygen(DO) will be at its absolute minimum; 2) odors and gases bubbling up. In the zone of recovery the river will slowly restore its oxygen through aeration process. The anaerobic conditions will disappear. Nitrites will be converted into nitrates and stimulate growth of algae, which will produce oxygen through process of photosynthesis. In zone of clean water oxygen levels are really elevated. And BOD is almost satisfied.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'eau
  • Traitement des eaux
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
DEF

The ratio of the amounts of odd-carbon n-alkanes to those of even-carbon n-alkanes.

CONT

Carbon Preference Index (CPI). Generally the ratio of abundance of odd over even carbon number paraffins, specifically calculated over the C24-C34 range. Hydrocarbons derived predominantly from terrestrial sources and/or at low maturity exhibit a predominance of odd-numbered alkanes (resulting in a high CPI); this feature disappears with increasing maturation level (CPI approaches 1.0).

CONT

... case studies show that in ancient detrital sediment the predominance of the original odd n-alkanes of high molecular weight is preserved mainly in relatively shallow shales and silts, where degradation of kerogen has not yet started... With increasing maturity, and odd-even preference(also known as CPI : carbon preference index) of about 5 : 1 in shallow detrital material is reduced to around unity in the zone of oil formation, as a result of thermal degradation and the introduction of new alkanes, which dilutes the original odd-even predominance.

French
