Isothiazolone biocides are broad spectrum antimicrobials used in a variety of industrial applications. They biodegrade in the environment very rapidly with half-lives of less than 26 hours. Metabolism involves the cleavage of the isothiazolone ring and subsequent oxidation to alkyl compounds and CO2. The isothiazolone ring is also susceptible to nucleophilic attack. Similar to most biocides, these compounds show a significant degree of toxicity to aquatic organisms. 2, record 2, English, - isothiazolone

The term is applied as a qualitative indication of whether a particular organic transformation can be deemed to be an oxidation (2) or reduction, on the basis of the sum of the oxidation numbers of corresponding groups of carbon atoms in substrate and product. For example, the sum of the oxidation numbers of the two carbon atoms in each of the molecular entities ethene, ethanol and chloroethane is -4, and they are accordingly said to be at the same oxidation level. In ethane the corresponding sum is -6, and ethane is at a lower oxidation level. In ethyne, ethanal and dichloroethane these sums are -2, and these are at a common higher oxidation level than the other two groups of compounds. Accordingly the transformation of ethene to ethanal is an oxidation ... Oxidation levels can be misleading guides since they refer only to the carbon atoms of the molecular entities. 1, record 3, English, - oxydation%20level

2, record 3, French, - degr%C3%A9%20d%27oxydation

Biological Filter. High-rate treatment can also be obtained in a biological filter system. Biological filtration is a technique for promoting contact between a free-flowing wastewater and a stationary growth of microorganisms in the presence of atmospheric air. The system does not depend on filtration in the usual sense for its effect.... Biological filter systems(such as the trickling filter) have generally proven to be unsuitable for pulp and paper wastewaters, exhibiting even greater instability to waste variability than activated sludge systems. However, the rotary disc system(a more recent design of biological filter) has been successful on a number of wastewaters and appears to deserve consideration for future applications. In this system a biological growth is cultivated on the disc surfaces. A series of closely-spaced corrugated plastic discs are anchored to a rotating shaft and supported above a trough through which the wastewater is channeled at a controlled rate. The lower 30 to 40% of each disc extends into the wastewater, while the upper portion is exposed to air. Thus, an area of biological growth alternates between submergence to absorb food and exposure to air for oxidation. Any number of rotating assemblies can be used in series to achieve the desired degree of BOD removal. 1, record 4, English, - rotary%20disc%20biological%20filter

1, record 4, French, - filtre%20biologique%20%C3%A0%20disques%20rotatifs

The first requisite of an adequate diet is a source of energy, provided by oxidation of the three bulk nutrients : carbohydrate, fat, and protein. The unit of energy used in calculating energy requirements is the kilocalorie(kcal), also called the nutritional calorie(abbreviated Cal, with a capital C), the amount of energy which in the form of heat is required to raise the temperature of 1. 0 kg of water by 1 degree, from 15 to 16 ° C. Kilocalories are the same units used in calculating standard-free-energy changes of metabolic reactions. 1, record 5, English, - kilocalorie

1, record 5, French, - kilocalorie
