CONT

Under the Criminal Code provisions governing the language of the accused, provinces and territories have an obligation to establish criminal courts that are "institutionally bilingual. "The Supreme Court of Canada leaves no doubt as to the degree of bilingualism required : there must be true equality of English and French, without regard to any administrative inconvenience this may cause.

CONT

DEF

The level or concentration of a physical or chemical hazard to which an employee is exposed.

CONT

Health and Welfare Canada has identified a tolerable exposure level (tolerable daily intake) for PCBS of μg/kg body weight per day.

CONT

The estimate of benzene exposure level was developed in six concentration ranges (<1 ppm; 1-5 ppm; 6-10 ppm; 11-25 ppm; 26-50 ppm; and >50 ppm). ... When we examined relative risks of BP [benzene poisoning] by intensity of exposure at 1.5 years prior to the diagnosis of benzene poisoning, compared to subjects who have less than 5 ppm exposure at that time, we obtained RRs [relative risks] of 2.2 (95% CI=1.7-2.9), 4.7 (95% CI=3.4-6.5), and 7.2 (95% CI=5.3-9.8) for intensity of 5 to 19 ppm, 20 to 39 ppm, and >/= 40 ppm categories.

OBS

Do not confuse with "exposure intensity". The term "intensity" refers to the degree or amount of some quality, condition; it expresses the force, strength, energy, degree of some characteristic quality. The term "level" designates a position on a scale in respect of amount, intensity, extent, or the like; it expresses the relative amount or intensity of any property, attribute, or activity. Since the level studied corresponds most of the time to an observed concentration of a substance, the two expressions "exposure level" and "exposure concentration" can often be used interchangeably even if they are not true synonyms. One must choose according to the context. See also "exposure score. "

DEF

Niveau traduisant l'intensité d'une exposition à une substance dangereuse.

CONT

DEF

An occupational disease of coal workers resulting from deposition of coal dust in the lungs.

OBS

Black lung disease is the common name for coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) or anthracosis, a lung disease of older workers in the coal industry, caused by inhalation, over many years, of small amounts of coal dust.

OBS

anthracosis : A histological term describing the accumulation of black pigment in lung tissue or in other organs. In the lung the accumulation often appears as macular lesions, usually in a centrilobular location, along the walls of bronchioles, but also along interlobular septa or in the subpleural space. This pigment is mainly composed of carbonaceous material and may originate from cigarette smoke(or other smoked drugs, such as crack cocaine), atmospheric pollution, residential exposure to wood(or biomass) smoke or occupational exposure to carbon-containing dusts, such as diesel exhaust, soot, fly ash, carbon black, graphite and coal. Thus a more or less marked degree of anthracosis may be found in nonsmoking urban residents from heavily polluted areas or in inhabitants(often females) of poor countries with a cold climate(so-called ’hut lung’). Anthracosis is only rarely associated with overt pulmonary disease, except after prolonged, heavy, usually occupational exposure, when the condition is preferably labelled as a pneumoconiosis, e. g. graphite pneumoconiosis(graphitosis) or coal workers pneumoconiosis. The latter pneumoconiosis is often called anthracosilicosis(particularly in continental Europe), because this pneumoconiosis has been considered to be caused predominantly by the silica content of coal dust. While this may be true in many instances, the use of anthracosilicosis to indicate coal worker's pneumoconiosis is probably not entirely appropriate, because the pathology of coal workers pneumoconiosis is different from that of silicosis.

OBS

DEF

The point in a plant succession at which development has continued beyond the balanced state of climax.

CONT

climax : The culminating stage of plant succession for a given environment, the vegetation being conceived as having reached a highly stable condition. NOTE :(1) Some ecologists restrict the term to vegetation of mature sites and soils, which they presume to have a high degree of permanence. Others apply it to vegetation which they conceived to be stable only as long as the environment remains unchanged or to vegetation which changes only in response to changes in climate and/or soil substrate that are slow relative to the rate of plant succession.(2) Clements claimed that, for a given region, there was only one true climax-the stable vegetation of mesic sites, the nature of which determined by climate and hence termed by him the climatic climax; deviations that are stable only through the influences of factors other than climate received special names, e. g. pre-climax(local unfavorable conditions preventing full vegetational complexity), postclimax(local favorable conditions permitting fuller complexity), biotic climax(maintained by biotic factors), edaphic climax(maintained by soil factors).

DEF

A (usually fossil) organism of uncertain relationships.

CONT

Permian reefs were mainly constructed by organisms referred to as problematica, calcareous algae, bryozoans, echinoderms, and calcareous sponges. Problematica (or, in this case, microproblematica because of their small size) are enigmatic organisms which are hard to classify because they do not seem to have left any clear descendants (or even close relatives) whose activities and remains might provide clues to their ancestors’ identity. These enigmatic organisms are therefore known to paleontologists as problematica (problematicum is the singular form) for their problematic relation to other living things. (Generally speaking, the farther back in time we look, the more problematica there are, because many extinct organisms have no clear descendants.

CONT

Where question exists as to the organic or inorganic origin of a specimen, the terms dubiofossil ..., problematicum ..., or problematic fossil are used.

OBS

problematicum(pl. problematica) : While in theory almost any organism could be labelled a problematicum under [the given] definition(almost every species has some degree of uncertainty about its relationships, even if only within its genus), in practice the term is generally reserved for those taxa for which the uncertainty runs to a very high level, generally phylum level or higher. Also, this uncertainty generally should not be due to poor preservation alone, but reflect a true shortage of shared characters with modern phyla.

  • Thread Spinning (Textiles)
CONT

Gel spinning is a special process used to obtain high strength or other special fiber properties. The polymer is not in a true liquid state during extrusion. Not completely separated, as they would be in a true solution, the polymer chains are bound together at various points in liquid crystal form. This produces strong inter-chain forces in the resulting filaments that can significantly increase the tensile strength of the fibers. In addition, the liquid crystals are aligned along the fiber axis by the shear forces during extrusion. The filaments emerge with an unusually high degree of orientation relative to each other, further enhancing strength.

OBS

The process can also be described as dry-wet spinning, since the filaments first pass through air and then are cooled further in a liquid bath. Some high-strength polyethylene and aramid fibers are produced by gel spinning.
