DENDRITIC CRYSTAL [4 records]

Record 1 2022-09-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

A small ice crystal of the hexagonal tabular form ...

OBS

... the distance across the crystal from one side of the hexagon to the opposite side may be as large as about 1 millimeter, and the thickness perpendicular to this dimension is of the order of one-tenth as great; this crystal form is usually formed at temperatures of-10 to-20 °C by sublimation; at higher temperatures the apices of the hexagon grow out and develop dendritic forms.

Domaine(s)

CONT

Record 2 2012-03-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
DEF

The characteristic or typical crystal form, combination of forms, or other shape of a mineral, including irregularities.

CONT

Crystal Habit. The characteristic crystal shape (for example: platy, equant, granular, cubic, stubby, lath shaped, tabular, columnar, pyramidal, prismatic, blade-like, needle-like) of a mineral is its habit.

CONT

Some hematite and martite has a strong euhedral fine grained habit. The equigranular mineral habit in this type of ore usually gives well segregated silica and iron-oxide grains ...

OBS

Examples of crystal or mineral habits are acicular(needlelike), tabular(broad and flat), fibrous(hairlike), or prismatic(elongated in one direction). Aggregates of crystals may possess the following habits : botryoidal(grapelike), dendritic(arborescent), or reniform(kidney-shaped).

OBS

Many minerals may be found in more than one habit ... For example, galena may be found in euhedral crystals or in a massive/granular form, and malachite is usually botryoidal ... but may also be fibrous or stalactitic.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Minéralogie
DEF

Record 4 1999-05-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

A crystal, particularly an ice crystal, with complex and often fernlike branches.

OBS

Dendritic ice crystals possess hexagonal symmetry in their ideal forms, and tend to develop when a crystal grows by sublimation at temperatures close to-15°C.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF
