DEPRESSION PH [11 records]

Record 1 2012-02-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Biotechnology
CONT

... inclusion of the soil system in the buffering reactions introduces new sources of buffering which can retard pH depression in the system... the displacement of aluminum from exchange sites becomes a major source of buffering...

OBS

to buffer: to add a buffer (to a solution).

OBS

buffer: any substance in a solution that tends to stabilize the hydrogen ion concentration by neutralizing any added acid or alkali.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Biotechnologie
DEF

Action de verser un tampon dans une solution.

OBS

tampon : mélange de solution dont le pH ne s'altère pratiquement pas au cours d'une dilution.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

The direction toward which the wind is blowing; direction of flow vector.

CONT

The pH of soils(0 to 12 cm deep) under closed canopies downwind from a gas processing plant in southern Alberta was depressed more than 0. 15 pH units in a three month period. A depression of 0. 15 pH units occurred within a 25, 000 km² area in central Alberta where half the sulphur emissions were upwind of the study area.

On peut admettre que dans ce cas la diffusion horizontale s'effectue lentement par cercles concentriques à partir de la zone directement polluée. En revanche, par vent faible et modéré ou fort, les polluants sont emportés dans la direction du vent.

Record 3 2002-04-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
  • Water Pollution
CONT

Studies done in the past two years have shown that acidic snow resulted in severe depression of pH in streams and surface water of lakes during the spring runoff. The maximum increase in hydrogen ion concentration in the ten streams surveyed to date was up to 15 times the annual average. A spring pH depression is coincident with spring spawning of some species of fish and amphibians.

OBS

A pH drop is a sudden pH depression.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'air
  • Pollution de l'eau
CONT

Record 4 2001-05-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
CONT

Nitric acid may play a more significant role in short-term acidification associated with spring melt of nitrate containing snowpack by adding to the existing pH depression caused by sulphate. Studies to date of this phenomenon have found that sulphate concentrations still exceed nitrate on an equivalent basis, even during spring runoff.

While much emphasis has been placed on reducing sulphur dioxide emissions, NOx emissions must also viewed with concern due to their contribution to the pH depression associated with the snowpack melt episodes.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
CONT

While much emphasis has been placed on reducing sulphur dioxide emissions, NOx emissions must also viewed with concern due to their contribution to the pH depression associated with the snowpack melt episodes. This depression, when imposed on the surface waters where the acidity has already been increased due to excess sulphates, results in levels of acidity that may be critical and occur at sensitive life stages of many aquatic organisms, even though the long-term average acidity may be tolerated by a normal biological habitat.

CONT

Both sulphuric and nitric acids contribute acidity to surface waters during periods associated with pH depression and fish stress. There is no strong evidence at present for anticipating any appreciable reduction in long-term lake or stream acidification from a reduction in nitrate inputs.

CONT

Workers in Sweden, Norway, and the United States reported that when snow melts, the first portion of the melt water is much more acidic than the last. This often causes a sudden drop in the pH of drainage streams and in lakes during early spring.

OBS

A pH drop is a sudden pH depression.

CONT
