Whereas the seasonal pycnocline disappears every winter, the permanent pycnocline is always present in [the subpolar regions]. The vertical density gradient in the main pycnocline is very strong, and the turbulence within the upper mixed layer induced by the air-sea exchanges of wind and heat cannot overcome the great stability of the main pycnocline to penetrate into the deeper ocean. The stability of the main pycnocline acts as a barrier against turbulent mixing processes, and beneath this depth the water has not had contact with the surface for a very long time. 2, record 1, English, - permanent%20pycnocline

1, record 3, French, - jet%20de%20barri%C3%A8re%20montagneuse
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
1, record 3, French, - jet%20de%20barri%C3%A8re%20montagneuse
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT

1, record 3, French, - jet%20de%20barri%C3%A8re%20montagneuse
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 5 OBS

7, record 4, French, - couche%20de%20m%C3%A9lange
